Trich X's?

Question

Irie,

Well I've been potting up my seed grown babies from trays to individual pots..

Most of the seeds were from Evil Genius...many thanks bro, & maybe some others.

Now some of them were tagged the same but look distinctly different.....

Some have no tag at all!

I really don't have much experience in the field of cacti.....

So some of the tags I have;

Aya x Pedro

Bridgii X Pach

Pach X Scop

There were probably more ???

Seem to remember SSO2 X's??

I've added a few shot of some that were grafted....it might help??

Respect,

Z

Hi Zaka, nice seeing some pics of your plants! Most of them (the ones that look a bit look a bridgesii with very flat ribs and the yellowish spines) are the Trichocereus Glaucus that i´ve been spreading around. I dont really think its a Glaucus Ritter but we´ll need to see how they´ll look when mature. Will have a closer look at the other pics when i have more time. bye Eg

I like your idea of using plastic cups, Think I'll do the same.

How do you poke holes in the cups ie what is your technique? (I would probably use a nail or something but maybe you have a good method)

Cheers!

Irie,

Just one or two, hundred...more actually!!

Gonna have to start floggin them to some of the hotels round here....

Might prove a good move for the folks that are in the know! Now that's a vacation! :shroomer:

Yeah mon, the pots work out good n cheap.

I use a dremmel to punch 5 holes in the base....you have to scrape off the plastic on the bit, every 9 or so.

I do them three at a time!

Z

Hi Zaka,

Wow those seedlings look great!

Have you had any dramas with the clear plastic cups?

I sometimes use plastic cups but get coloured ones as I was told to avoid clear plastic as it would let to much light through, causing mould & algae to grow, eventually damaging/killing the seedling/plant. Like I said " yours look great!"

Talking about putting holes in your plastic cups, the quickest & easiest way I find to do this is, I get a nail the same size as the hole I want, a pair of pliers & a candle, then I simply hold the nail with the pliers, heat the nail above the candle & melt the holes required in the plastic, this way I never crack the plastic.

Cheers

Irie,

I never crack the plastic.

Nah, I used to do it like but it pissed me off huffin the fumes!!!

I always let my plants dry completely, so don't get algae...

I use them for alot of different plants...

Tend to go for 7oz & fill only about halfway.... in order to achive complete dry out...

Plus they fit nicely into soft-drinks crates, which makes for easy transportation...

Z

Problem with these plastic cups is that they dont take UV Light very well and dissolve themselves in 1-2 years. Same for most takeaway containers.

I actually came up with another method today. I heated a fork on a gas flame and punched a row of 4 holes at a time. I did this twice for each cup and did two or three cups before reheating the fork again. There were fumes but it wasn't that bad in a well ventilated area. I guess there are plenty of good ways of punching holes without splitting the cups.

I noticed 'slice' likes to pump the water into his seedlings for the first year or two (with full sun), so I'm experimenting with the holes in the side of the cup to slightly increase the available water.(That's holes in the side only and none in the bottom).

These holes are about 2mm from the base. The idea being that there will be a small, shallow resevior of water at the bottom of the cup so the seedlings will have better access to water in the first year or two. I will now add some charcoal to the substrate to keep it clean and healthy and prevent any problems with 'sour' water. but the reservior is only 2mm deep so it will be flushed every time I water them, and it is an experiment so any negative results are just as good/informative as positive results.

Well in my enviro, they last about 6-9mths....totally disposable...

Plastic germination sandwich tubs will last 1-2yrs....but I guess they are out of the sun..

I usually have some charcoal in my compost mixes...

The grafts are outside in the elements.....

The graft stock is a local cactus, Pilosocereus (royenii??), that I know can take the local rainfall....

Nice one man! How many seeds per pot did you initially plant out? I am new to cacti and keen to get going this spring.

I have used plastic cups before for other plants, I use the tool on my swiss army knife that is supposed to be used or belt buckle holes to out my holes in. No cracks and easy as!

Irie,

The seeds were germinated in a plastic sandwich tub before going into trays, then on to pots...
