Greenhouse installation

Recommended Posts

So, I decided to install a temporary greenhouse in the location I will probably ultimately have a permanent one. The temp one should get the plants that need it through this winter and next anyway.

Arrived home with the trailer in once piece.. it didn't collapse under what seems like a tonne of gravel :)

Laying out the frame. The site is on a slight slope so will need to be levelled out.

Start to dig, get the first row done to guage how deep the hole needs to be.

More digging. Drinks break at the halfway mark.

Fuelled by rebull I continuted to dig, and started lining up the boxing to make sure it's all level

Framing completed, here comes the GAP7 :D Thought about putting down polythene, but f*ckit, the gravel is 100mm deep and packs pretty well, plus it's a slope so hopefully water will runoff. That and the shops are closed and I just want to get on with it.

Car is stuck. Can't reverse until I get rid of the heavy trailer of gravel lol.

Always good to see how people do their greenhouses.

For your permanent one are you going to build from scratch or buy a kit? Large metal framed glass windows can be picked up from the tip shops for very cheap ;)

If you haven't found a temporary greenhouse yet check out this http://www.trademe.co.nz/home-living/outdoor-garden-conservatory/greenhouses/auction-483019890.htm

A friend got one in an auction, much more sturdy than the other kitset plastic houses I have seen.

One more pic of how it is right now. I do already have a greenhouse, I got this one: for $100. That 3x2 one is just too big for what I need right now, plus it has no shelving. When I buy shelving it will be to fit a proper greenhouse

I need to find a way of compacting the gravel a bit. Raking it around is fun, kinda like those miniature zen gardens you can get for your desk. But on a bigger scale. I might fill my garden trolley up and wheel that around. Either that or just jump around on it lots. hmmm

Theres some real nice sturdy looking ones on trademe although they're a bit dare.

I saw an amazing geodesic dome one about a month back that I think only went for a grand that was Identical to this. I had the money just not the room :BANGHEAD2:

And, here is the greenhouse installed. It's really crap quality lol, but what do you expect for $100. At least it should last a year or so till I can decide what I'm going to do with regard to a proper one.

That geo-dome looks awesome!! I don't have room for something like that either tho :)

Looks pretty good mate, it will hold up for a bit more then a year I've got one that looks the same but has 1 shelf less length wise so is basically a square. Anyway mine only has two small holes in the plastic cover and two of the plastic connectors that hold the poles in place cracked so I duck taped it to hold the poles in. They're not too shaby for $100, mine was $80 from the hardware store.

How tall is the roof apex? It looks a bit taller then mine

I think I have the same one, they are pretty sturdy, but I would advise using the rope and pegs as I have had some in the past turn parachute. which breaks a mans heart trust me.

Looks like you are getting yourself organised Bit.

When you talk about your green house I cant get the photos out of my head from a couple of years ago when yours collapsed  I felt for you that day.

If in doubt with one of these add some bracing and tie it down. Its not the covering you need to worry about its the frame.

But you probably know this. :)

Cheers

Thanks guys. This is 1.95m tall in the middle, plenty of room to walk around inside, which was a problem in the last one I had.

I am concerned about the plastic, I know how brittle it will get before long!

The last one I had that collapsed had a much much better reinforced cover but even that perished inside of 18 months or so.

Stillman - how did you use the ropes/pegs? I've put pegs through the holes in the frame on the ground (assume this is why the base pieces had holes). There were no instructions on what to do with the ropes. Nowhere external to tie them to, so I assume I need to somehow rig them internally so they're out of the way but still holding it down.

I have my plastic cover tucked under and brick holding it down are on the inside, like i said I've had mine for more then a year now and there is no perishing but the two holes are sort of like cracks so I guess like you said it does become more brittle and they aren't large (50c coin size) or in structural points of the cover.

The green stitching holds it together fairly well, mine sits near two trees and I've had large branched fall on it without breaking the cover.

Only other downside to mine is on some occasions the zipper for the door misses a tooth and mucks up the zipping mechanism

this is how I did it Bit

and I also got some star pickets and stabalised the inside shelves as I have had a few disasters in my time lol

Using the rope and pegs will help if you get windy days.
