Psylo Posted January 22, 2012 Hi, I am seeking the dried foliage of native Sarsparilla / Smilax australis. Hoping for at least 25g at minimum. For the purposes this being used for, other Smilax sp cannot be substituted. I have access to other Smilax varieties n both leaf & root form. I know where there is some, but it's in a protected, regenerated area so would rather not go down that path (and I hope others will not either). Can anyone help me ? http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Smilax~australis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smilax_australis
tarenna Posted January 24, 2012 Sure can I have access to heaps - pls send me a PM. Although Smilax glyciphylla (not Smilax australis) is generally regarded as native sarsparilla. It is quite delicious. http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Smilax~glyciphylla cheers MSG
Psylo Posted January 24, 2012 Hi tarenna, and thank you for the generous offer. For the purposes of our project, we are attempting to find native bushfood herbs specific (but not exclusive) to a small pocket of NSW, that being in the Sydney urban bushland region of here: Smilax australis was tentatively identified 'on the pitch' as the native sarsparilla, but subsequent research borne from your reply has made me rethink the sp. as a potential misidentification. Smilax glyciphylla does in fact rate a mention in a 10-year-old paper which outlines the flora within the bushland corridors of the district. See page 12 of this document: http://www.ryde.nsw....nd_Ryde_LGA.pdf You will note that sp. australis is not an inclusion ! We may have been off the mark. That's not to say that the research behind this paper isn't erroneous either. Let me communicate with my project partner on this development before I seek your assistance in procuring foliage. Again, thanks, you have opened up a new avenue, which is quite interesting.
