Paradoxical

Brug or Datura ID please

Question

HI there folks,

I found this plant growing on a lunch break and was wondering if any one knew exactly what it was. I was thinking it looked like a Datura or a Brugmansia but I have not dealt with either of them very much, but would love to add a small bit to a smoking mix if its correct.

Here is some info: Its growing under a larger tree in a garden. The stems have white hairs all over them. The plant is about 1.7m tall. the flowers didn't really have any scent. for the rest please see the attached photos. Feel free to ask for more information - I can easily pop down a have another look.

Cheers,

P

Really easy to propagate.. When it finishes flowering just take a good size cutting (make sure to cut right under a node), take off all the leaves except the top two, and put the bottom 1\3rd in a jar or rinsed out glass bottle filled with water.

After a week or two you'll notice these little nodules all over the part of the stem under water. Once these form you can just put it straight into potting mix and give it a good water. If you leave it in water longer it'll start growing roots in the water so don't stress if you're feeling lazy and take a bit longer to pot it up.

Hmm, I always get an impression of frangipani when smelling the flowers. I feel this thread needs an obligatory warning, as much for random people reading this thread as for the OP:

The alkaloids in brugmansia and related species are extremely dangerous. Be careful how you handle them (I don't know if it's true but have heard of people being poisoned through dermal absorption after handling the leaves) and make sure you research a lot before putting any in a mix intended for smoking so that you know how much to use. Test very small amounts first, and wait until said small amounts have worn off before trying larger amounts. A dry mouth is a good indication that the dosage is approaching a level you probably don't want. Most of all, make sure any person who tries your smoking mix knows that there are tropanes in it and are well educated on the subject.

I personally don't think there is much recreational potential with tropanes, but a very small dose can be really effective at quelling nausea. Most of all, they are beautiful plants.

might be worth noting that it could be up to several days for the effects of even a small amount to wear off and any more taken in that time may have a cumulative effect which, in this case, could lead to some pretty bad stuff. caution is really important.

Also worth mentioning you will probably get naked and do some weird shit and have very convincing hallucinations, all while feeling like you have been poisoned.

very, very nice specimen, my favorite brug of all aswell, but it likes rather the cold.

i guess it recieves a lot of fert as garden run off, thats why she has only a few flowers, less fert = more flowers. no fert = hardly flowers.

please, when prunning brugmansias always wear gloves and eye protection.
