pinegapcontrol Posted October 13, 2015 Tragedy. Time for poison.
Spanishfly Posted October 14, 2015 (edited) Looks like that one got overwatered, pinegapcontrol. Desert cacti live in a region of sparse rainfall - their tissues are designed to swell and store water when it is available. But if they get too wet they can absorb too much and split. This happened to a couple of my L williamsii in 2012 - we had a torrential downpour just after they had come out of their winter quarters - 8 inches in one day. But they made a complete recovery - I brushed the split with cinnamon powder and dried the pots out. See pics of now and then. pinegapcontrol Posted October 15, 2015 its not a split, its a slug or a snail bite, ive only had the plant a few months, it came to me in pretty poor health.
Master B Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) Its not over watered. He is talking about snail damage mate. The bain of my garden as well... I dont hate much... But dam i hate snails. Feel for you pinegapcontrol nice specimen though mate Edited October 15, 2015 by Master B
pinegapcontrol Posted October 15, 2015 yeah those snails are fkd, its a bit cool watching them climb up the side of something like a spachianus or a schickendantzii, climbing straight on top of the spines, it must be like a bed of nails...spreading the load. i do try and avoid poison but sometimes its necessary and some of the "organic" methods are not really practical on a large scale. i always try n look on the bright side and think well at least it never rots.
BedOSpines Posted October 15, 2015 I put copper foil tape around the pots, snails won't go near it.
