Psylocke Posted October 17, 2011 (edited) I do love those Gymnos! Sadly, I have had much trouble starting them from seed. I think the first one is gibbosum? Mine flowered for the first time this summer after four years from seed. No seeds though:( Edited October 17, 2011 by Psylocke

Evil Genius Posted October 17, 2011 My first cactus was a gymnocalycium so i definately like em. Have a few huge intermediate forms of Gymnocalycium Baldianum that originally came from the wild somewhere. I have lots of diffrent gymno seed so feel free to let me know if you wanna make a trade. bye Eg
Stillman Posted October 18, 2011 Does anyone have a any idea which Gymnos are self pollinating as I have a few specimens developing flowers, I think I would like to do some experiments with grafting these guys as they are so hardy, I read G gibbosum was self polinating? what about G baldianum or G mihanovichii? or denedatum for that matter? Sorry for so many Qs hahah am a bit curious to mess around with a few crosses as well. I'll look up a few things on pollinating cacti flowers as well. Stillman Posted October 19, 2011 http://www.gargamel-cactus.com/photos/album81?page=2 found this and thought it was a really useful tool in recognising Gymno sp.
Moses Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) great looking plants Stillman, im a big fan of the colourful gymnocalyciums i crossed my mihanovichi with a grafted "hibotan" and the seedlings are showing some interesting plants. two of my crests are beginning to flower so i'll be crossing them soon Edited October 19, 2011 by Moses
Stillman Posted October 19, 2011 Moses how do the red seedlings go? They must have enough "green" in them to survive without grafting? That is cool as I will have to try that. I'm going to cross my G mihanovichi with something too dunno what or which yet maybe G quinelium or G baldianum.
Moses Posted October 19, 2011 i find a lot of the coloured seedlings have green in them its just masked by the reds i have two or three with no visible green yet they are on their own roots slow growing but still alive. Google image gymnocalycium hibotan nishiki for some cool coloured plants. This is my first year playing with them so im still learning.
