migraineur Posted March 18, 2011 Hey guys I have some acacia maidenii seeds, however, I am unsure if I need to do anything special to them to help them germinate. I know some Australian natives do well after a bush fire. Also, is it worth planting them at this time of year in Perth or is it bad timing? It has been unusually warm this Summer and Autumn though. Please excuse any spelling or syntax errors as I have a migraine which inhibits my language abilities during an episode = /
Gunter Posted March 18, 2011 boil some water, then put them in it, while it is still hot... leave them in the water overnight, it will cool, this is fine, you don't actually boil them, you just put them into boiling hot water and let them soak in it as it cools... anyway they will be ready to sow then
~shameless~ Posted March 18, 2011 I'v heard of well used bong water being used to soak seeds overnight to aid in germination ( bush fire simulation ) of a few natives ,profesionally believe it or not.
occidentalis Posted March 18, 2011 yes bong water works for smoke sensitive seeds which acacias are not. they require heat or nicking of the seed coat to allow imbibition.
Mycot Posted March 19, 2011 Several other threads here go into acacia cultivation in quite some depth. A study I came across showed scarification to give the best results in acacia seed germination.
