visiting Tasmania

Recommended Posts

hey guys, going to make my first trip to tassie soon. I'm a pretty keen hiker and would like to know some nice places to visit. also would love to see any aboriginal sites. How accessible are the National Parks in the south west of the state? cheers.

There are heaps of amazing parks here in Tasmania.

if your heading south of hobart, the hartz mountains are amazing, Adamasons Peak (which is not in a park) is well worth doing, but yeah the south coast track is amazing.

you dont have to do the whole south coast track, even just a day or two walk in and out is amazing. I only know it from the cockle creek end so cant tell you much about the western part of the tracks/s.

there are also amazing walks in central tasmania, cradle mountain and mount field national parks, and of course the overland track. From what i hear in the northwest at the tarkine is also amazing, i havent got there yet.

There are some good books around on walks in Tasmania. I particularly like "step into history in tasmanian reserves" by David Leaman, as it has a strong focus on the geology of the walks.

i guess it all depends on how long your gonna be here for.

Sorry i cant tell you much about aboriginal sites, i know there are quite a few on Bruny Island, and also at Recherche Bay.

We should catch up for coffee.

Cheers, Obtuse.

thanks for the info guys, thats the 3rd recommendation I have had for cockle creek so I'll be pencilling that one in for sure. only going for 10 days so more keen to do a number of 2 or 3 day hikes than the full overland track or south coast walks. looks like such a beautiful and unique part of the world, cannot wait! the Museum of Old and New Art looks amazing too, will have to check that out. guess in the end I'll just start driving around and see what comes my way, let randomness be my guide...

a coffee (or tea :) ) sounds great obtuse, will get in touch.

mate there are so many things to see. Youve gotta see the Styx Valley as it goes without saying - some of the mountain ash there are only rivaled by a few redwoods in california in terms of height. I think one is 133 metres or so (the largest tree ever recorded was felled near Watts River, Victoria but that's another story).

Most of that tanin creeks are full of river blackfish as well as trout. I caught an amazing brown over there but the greasies taste awesome.

was an amazing trip, freycinet peninsula and the south coast track were the highlights. the people are very friendly, and the wilderness is... well, wild! here are some photos I took, to encourage others to make the trip down south! check out the mushroom pics in the fungi forum too.

Beautiful pics :)

I love it when you get on the plane to go to tassie (from melb) and the announcement is broadcast "fasten your seatbelts"

....and then what seems like 10mins later...it's "prepare for descent" .lol .

hey , once again, beautiful mun.

when in Hobart the front door of the strippers is awfully close to the front door of the gay club, there is half naked dancing but it will give you quite a surprise when your full of piss and walk through the wrong door.

Tasmania is a beautiful part of the world definitely a must everyone should see

thanks mate... need to work on my photography a bit though, too much exposure or something in some of the shots. actually I got the boat which was a nice alternative to flying - when I was in indonesia a local guy I met said "man I would never get a plane anywhere, I feel much more at home on a boat no matter how long it takes!". that inspired me. leaving devonport habour at sunset is a pretty amazing experience, very beautiful with the mountains, moon, and ocean everywhere.

I feel much more at home on a boat

i wonder if he'd ever been out in a force 8/9 gale?

One time i was catching the ferry from Calais to Dover. It was up around force 8.

The hovercrafts had all been canceled & so had 2 ferries.

Finally they put all the passengers waiting onto one ferry & off we go.

You've never seen anything like it.

The ferry was absolutely packed w/people & the storm was tossing the boat from side to side.

People were unable to move freely about the boat because it was so packed, so many couldn't make it to the toilets..which were all occupied anyway, & because it was so rough much ov the deck was closed off.

I'd say roughly a third ov the people on that boat were sea sick...there was puke everywhere...it stunk, & combined w/the lurching ov the ship it was dangerous to walk about...skidding on sick...

Nothing homely about that boat.
