Don't know the answer to your question as far as humidity goes, but i have one of these controllers for controlling the temp in my fermenter cupboard...

Mine controls a 500 watt heat light...

I am interested in hearing more about your kogi, are you using to ferment rice as wine?

Been wanting to have a go at that for a while, the guys in the states can get it at their local corner store in the asian part of town, but i don't even got an asian shop to choose from

I'd be interested in a trade for something.

perfectconcepts.com.au sell a basic humidity controller that connects to "humidity control devices" usually a fan or 2. They are cheap & reliable but they only do humidity, not temperature.

Priva environmental control gear (probably lots of similar brands) will do everything except make your coffee & corn flakes for breakfast but you might want to duck out & take out a second mortgage to afford it.

I did see a while back on one of the mushroom forums a guy had set up an old laptop as the control hub with all his bits n pieces connected to that. Not sure how easy or what the cost of that would be, but it might be an option worth exploring?

I used to grow koji for making miso and soy sauce. I just used a fish tank heater in a container with water. on top of this was the koji wrapped in cheesecloth, wrapped in blankets. The whole lot was put in another container. I found the temperature was easy enough to control by setting it about 5 degrees below the desired temp (depending on ambient temp) as the Aspergillus grows it can create quite a bit of heat. The humidity was contained within the blankets - if you start off with the rice cooked right it should provide its own humidity until complete. :)

Sorry mate, didn't even look at you're location and just assumed you to be aussie.

If you are into electronics and programming, you could probably build what you want using an arduino chip.

There's a fair few of the guys on our 'other' hobby forum that have gone into control processes pretty thourolly. Would be worth a couple of hours searching for you.

Yeah sorry i didn't notice your location either

I'm 95% certain the guy with the laptop controller was over on the shroomery.

Thanks anyway mate, but i'll pass on importing.

I'll ask our resident arduino expert your question though.

I've sent him a PM, don't see him around the boards as much as we used to, but he still pops in.

The swappsie was an off the hand comment, i have that many projects going already :BANGHEAD2:

They do say across the boards though that a rice fermentation distilled makes the mildest smoothest spirit there is.

A lot of trouble converting (either kogi or enzymes) compared to sugar's ease but worth it for the artisans. :worship:

any suggestions for texts that breaks processing down to really well. I checked out the suggestions list for processing form http://processing.org/ its located at.

http://processing.org/learning/books/

You guys use any of those.

Haven't heard back yet, i'll post a link to this thread for more input.

Heard back from the guy on distillers today, mate. He seems to think that what you want to know is already out there and easy once you get going....

the Arduino language is similar to C but simpler. It is based on Processing, which can be used to make very nice user interfaces.

I googled "Arduino mushroom" and found several articles on Arduino controllers for growing mushrooms. It looks like they are quite popular.

Everybody that I know who has messed about with Arduinos started out with all sorts of reservations. They all found it was much easier than they thought.

So I guess the best advice is to jump in. The Arduino starter kits that come with a book, wireless breadboard and a collection of electronic components look like a very easy way to get up and going.

Best of luck to your friend.
