∂an Posted November 30, 2010 Hi guys, I don't have much experience with cacti and would like some advice! 6 months ago I was given a 6 inch cutting (from near the bottom) of a very large san pedro plant. I threw it in a pot with 1 part river sand, 1 part searles cactus mix and rocks on the bottom to aid drainage. The cutting got very wet over the second half of winter and started to rot (red stuff on the base), but come spring i could feel roots were emerging and one month ago these pups emerged: The pups look healthy (but I guess they always do), but the cutting doesn't look so good with a lot of blackness (an infection or rot?) appearing at the spines and the exposed top surface. Here are pics of the single root that has emerged and the bottom surface: There is much less redness on the bottom surface than there was in the past; maybe this can be attributed to its new location where it doesn't get much rain. But still I am worried that if I don't improve its growing conditions that when I get back from OS its going to dead. What soil mix, nutrients, watering schedule or magik would you recommend to keep her alive? cheers!
dworx Posted November 30, 2010 Its fine just let the soil dry a bit before watering again or stop watering as often. Pups look nice.....
mescalito Posted December 1, 2010 Yep she'll be right, even let the base dry up un-potted for a while if ya worried. These are the ones I saved from the tip. They were all red and bleeding after being scraped out of a pile of soaking green waste.... now flowers and pups! Never say die
∂an Posted December 1, 2010 Never say die yep i am learning these spiney friends of ours are very tough to kill, but sometimes hard to grow well. cheers guys, I think your right too much water. the sand was the problem, too fine so it didn't allow efficient drainage. will make a mix with some coarse sand, soil and perlite and report on how it goes! mutant Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) there's really no reason to make a mix for trichos, unless you're seeing it as cheaper flower mixes with maybe some added perlite seems to be fine also depends on where you're at and the gardening style Edited December 1, 2010 by mutant
