Can anyone ID this for me.

Question

I have noticed this growing on our dirt road as it has been flowering over the past couple of weeks. It has a beautiful flower which sets to seed. Ants seem to love them. A leaf rubbed on the soft part of my arm caused a rash :o . I have only noticed them up and down our dirt road. I haven't seen them in our local bush so seed may have blown out of a truck or something. Not saying they aren't common but I haven't noticed them elsewhere. Hope the photo's are clear enough.

It's something in Malvaceae, probably Hibiscus but maybe Alyogyne. If you could get a macro shot of the stigma in profile I could take you to genus. It doesn't tally with any of the WA Malvaceae though, so I couldn't get you any further than that.

I thought it looked a bit like a hibiscus but there are so many different varieties. I will give a macro shot a go in the morning and post. I didn't want to break any of the plant off today and it was blowing a gale which made a clear shot difficult. I have 2 hibiscus in my garden and they are nothing like each other.

You need to go into your options and make it open in new tab as a normal function as I have. If I click the link it opens straight onto a new tab.

Thanks Zaka, I think your right with the belmoschus moschatus medik.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abelmoschus_moschatus

Interesting that it is used in liqueurs like Benedictine and also could be an aphrodisiac.

Might see if I can grab some seed before they finish. If anyone want's some please let me know. They must be pretty hardy as they don't get much water up there.

Cheers

Abelmoschus has broader leaves.

I think it is the fibre plant kenaf. Hibiscus cannabinus. Itches like fuck - just ask any of my staff who have had to harvest seed over the years ;)

That may explain why it seems to only follow my road. I live in farming region of mainly sugar cane and cattle. There is a property up the road a few miles that is owned by a what my cattle producer neighbor refers to as the "pot up the road". He is always growing weird and wonderful things. "I would imagine pot is one of them" :P . I went up 2 days ago and brought back some seed pods which have burst open leaving me with plenty of seeds. I didn't notice an itch associated with the plant though but boy, do the ants love them.

Thanks for that and if anyone wants some seed let me know.

Cheers
