ENtiTY Posted August 10, 2010 Back when I was grafting lophs I had 1 split and it wouldn't stop. That orange fungal crap got into it but that was only half of the problem. The split grew deeper as the loph grew even though I deprived it of water and slowed its growth rate. Eventually the split cleaved the meristem in 2 and the loph started to curl on on itself. Eventually the orange rot got it as I couldn't get the antifungal in under the curl properly and the days were humid. Splits seem to start after down pours of rain. I had a Astro caput-medusaea on peres open up after being out in light steady rain for only 3 hours. I couldn't believe it! I think shorter stocks and possibly smaller root balls may help in reducing the chances of a scion swell and split. That and keeping them out of the rain . I also think that once a split reaches a certain size/depth it is probably unstoppable. Sidewayschef - That split is exactly how mine started. One thing I would try is to pull it out of the pot, knock all the dirt off the roots and leave it high and dry. This should stop growth and may give the loph time to heal. If it does it may he worth lopping the stock so its shorter and re-rooting that. Should slow growth down enough so the loph can handle it. Just a theory
