Police Sniffer Dog Dies of Nose Cancer

Recommended Posts

A British police drug sniffer dog has died of nose cancer, apparently as a result of prolonged contact with cocaine and other drugs he was taught to detect.

Police Inspector Anne Higgins of Avon and Somerset police said nine-year-old Max was fine until a couple of weeks ago, when he became incapacitated by an aggressive tumour.

"It is ironic the wonderful organ that made him successful in his work has been his demise," she said.

"I took him to the police station which he usually loved and was his favourite place but he did not show any reaction to being there and we knew he was not right."

Max had retired from police work last year after arthritis robbed him of the use of his rear legs, resulting in the manufacture of a trolley that supported his rear end and allowed him to move around.

But the cancer symptoms immobilised his front legs and left him totally immobile.

Max's vet Kate Fairclough confirmed the exposure to drugs may have been a factor in Max's death.

"Sniffing drugs may well have been a factor — I certainly cannot rule it out," she said.
