nabraxas Posted December 15, 2008 5 to 15 per cent isn't much, but it was to be expected. what really sucks is giving $3.9 billion worth of free permits to the biggest polluters. that totally undermines the whole renewable energy industry & creates a scheme where the tax payer pays the polluter to keep on polluting. Companies like Woodside, which for the last 30 years has received tax exemption on it's condensate (worth $2.5 billion during the next four years), will receive an estimated 50 per cent free carbon permits, Alcoa will receive 90 per cent of its carbon permits for free. Even if these companies hadn't already factored in at least a 5% cut into their production model, the massive boost in competitiveness that all Australia's high emission exporters have had from the collapse ov the Australian dollar should have been more than enough to protect them from a measly 5% cut. Maybe we need to start this on a much smaller scale like they did in the US while faced with a recalcitrant federal president. Best to start in your own backyard....
