Unknown salvia

Question

G'day guys.

This arvo's trip to the local nursery yielded this plant. The nurseryman said that it is a Salvia, and that it has yellow flowers. Now, most Salvias that I'm aware of have red, pink, purple or white blooms, so this immediately caught my attention. Also, it was dirt-cheap.

The plant is about 40cm tall, and mature leaves are about 12cm long, and approximately 7.5cm wide. The stem is strongly ribbed and squarish in cross-section. The whole plant is slightly hairy, and the undersurface of the leaves is slightly greyish in colour.

Any ideas?

I'd go with madrensis too because of the flower colour, but the leaves on my plant look quite different. might just be different growing conditions though.

Cheers for that, guys. :)

*searches the SABforums for madrensis*

Interesting. Very interesting... a relative of, and a hypothesized parent to another "interesting" Salvia. I might have to try cross-pollination with some other Salvias, and see what I get. B)

If it helps, my plant was situated in full sun at the nursery. Evidently, it had been there for quite a while as the roots had grown out of the pot and into the ground. It seems to be a pretty happy lil' plant.

*hack* *koff* *choke*

Ahem.

Well, that wasn't exactly fun. One large leaf, air dried, ground up and rolled into a tally-ho. The smoke was acrid and harsh on the mouth, throat and lungs and stung the eyes. One drag caused immediate excessive salivation. A second drag hurt the throat. A third drag yielded immediate coughing. The rest of it was extinguished unceremoniously.

No good effects noted, unless spontaneous drooling floats your boat.

Teeth were then brushed to get rid of the taste before eating dinner. Thankfully a bowl of pasta with homemade pesto and a couple of glasses of red (2005 Vintina Estate pinot noir, local stuff and very affordable too) have got rid of the taste. Think I might have a crack at the cheese platter, just to make sure the taste of the stuff is gone.
