Need help with bike trailer

Recommended Posts

I want to build a bike trailer so i can carry a range of things, kayak, shopping, dog etc but Im stuck as to how to convert bike wheels into somthing I can stick on an axle? The idea is simple and thats two 24-26" bike wheels connected by a single axle, attached to the axle are two 80cm-1m long bits of angle iron ( maybe with 2 more bits attached to the ends of the angle iron to form a square for transporting boxes), these are to provide support for the kayak or box which is placed on top.

What about chopping the front forks off an old bike or even welding up your own version of a set of front forks?

Then ya just need to put the wheels on the way you would a normal front tyre?

You could also use like rear sway bars as the axles and hang the load like a basket. Just cut flat drill the ends of the sway bars to accommodate the normal bike thread, brace with some RHS and weld an outrigger like bar with a lug drilled in it to fit the wheel between

Here I drew a picture, excuse the poor art work

Could do it with 2 or 4 wheels I suppose

If you used 2 wheels

You'd need to get a pair of front forks weld a bar across the top, do a bar or swaybar across the bottom and make a prism like brace from the axel ends and the middle of the cross bar at the top. I drew a nother picture

my 10c worth anyways

Ive thought about using forks, but that would mean the tray would be raised above the wheels and less stable. I want it super simple and easy to pull apart into small bits. Here is my idea, I just want to know how to turn a bike wheel into somthing that can be mounted from the side, get it?

If you use a solid axle you'll have trouble when cornering (one wheel want to go faster than the other), especially when loaded.

The wheels have bearings in them though, the axle on a bike does not turn and so neither would this axle, each wheel being separate to the other would negate any turning probs. Yeah ive seen that one shiva. I might just use forks.

especially when loaded.

A lot of strange things can happen to bikes when loaded!
