paradox Posted March 28, 2007 sweet! hey torsten, do you know much about them? do you still stock them, or have any large plants?
Torsten Posted March 28, 2007 I know they don't root easily. Had a 45cm cutting for 3 years and it did not root. I was told they only root if the temp at the time of taking the cutting is above xx degrees. I kinda ignored that at the time to my own detriment. cutting rotted eventually. Gardener Posted March 29, 2007 Speaking of rooting (no Shroomytoonos, not that kind) has anyone tried Pro-gel? The blurb says PRO GEL is a high performance cloning and propagation gel. When used during grafting, Pro Gel helps improve the development of the graft. · PRO GEL contains plant growth hormones · PRO GEL speeds up the formation of calluses on the cutting · PRO GEL induces rapid root initiation and development · PRO GEL induces new leaf development · PRO GEL stays firmly coated to the cutting or clones, and is not washed away easily during watering. · PRO GEL has fungicidal activity to protect the cutting against damping off. I havent tried it but it sounds as if it could be good for cactus cuttings. http://www.accenthydroponics.com/ecom1/prod851.htm
Rev Posted March 29, 2007 I have a decent size one of these by seed is the best way but seed is a prohibited import i got mine as seedlings. i may have a spare one here at work, ill go look... no but we have 1 polaskia chichipe http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Cac...s_chichipe.html $6 plus postage if u need it it has some frost damage (-3C) but has recovered once repotted they are fast growers i recommend a 200mm pot with rich free draining mix
Rev Posted March 29, 2007 ive found myrtillocactus type cacti root well but it is true they prefer the hottest time of year to do so one peculaiarity is the tendency for cutting (laterals) grown plants to form a sprawling habit rather than the upright candelabra of seed grow plants i cant recal the name of this but its common to many plants incl rosemary, auracaria, juniper even cherries still it may make the harvesting of the garambullos easier.. Rev Posted March 29, 2007 also unlike most cacti - mytrillocactus and polaski seem to lack the tolerance to glyphosate they go yellow and collapse over a relatively long period. discovering that was somewhat distressing sometimes the root survives and reshoots most cacti can be sprayed with impunity - even directly - their waxy coat deflects the poison ive used it to get rid of sorrels and grasses amongst ball cacti and oxalis and nut grass from trich pots just when i got used to using glyphosate as a tool i rediscovred the humble garden hoe - well sharpened - beats it for speed, efficacy and cost on most applications!
