Guest Monkey Shines Posted August 30, 2002 Is the short leaved variety of khat self seeding?
Guest reville Posted August 30, 2002 Im curious. Heres what ive found. Seed thrown out as 'chaff' in a pot germinated well in june in perth. However the soil was fertile and moist. The soil around the mature khat trees ive seen is the usual perth sandplain crap - water repellant, dirt poor. *if* the plant was in good garden soil and *if* we had a warm winter combined with good soil moisture then i think this is highly likely as khat produces masses of flowers here
Guest Monkey Shines Posted August 31, 2002 There is a khat tree that is in rich garden soil with a huge amount of flowers, the garden was only cleared last year which would have prevented seedlings coming up before beacause the ground was entirely covered, so there might be some seedlings this year. Is there any easy way to collect the seed or would i have to pick them up from the ground? Most of the flowers are far up on the tree which is about 6m tall. Guest Monkey Shines Posted August 31, 2002 nah, so many khat trees around perth, what do the seed look like and how big are they?
Guest reville Posted September 2, 2002 Small rusty brown coloured seed with a papery wing that separates easily. It is actually quite difficult to get all the seedd out of their capsules even when dry. Id suggest just taking all the trusses and putting them aina bag and drying then bashing it to dislodge the seed which will accumualte on the bottom
planthelper Posted September 2, 2002 i allways look for selfseedlings, especialy under big trees, but all there is... if you are lucky are little plants produced by root-shoots. try do dig up as much of its root system as you can! catha might self seed but not under the umbrella of a big plant, look further downhill where the water runs of... those seedcapsules open and the winged seeds could fly very far indeed before resting somewhere and now only need to get washed to an occasional wet location. try to climb, break down branches to get those seeds, chances are slim you find good seeds under a tree. bye
