i've never used them, unless you count kerosene, but as well as being permitted on organic farms there is another huge advantage to using contact herbicides in amenity horticulture.
groundskeepers are forever spraying and hand weeding recently sprung annuals around established ornamentals. everyone has their own idea of how much overspray with glyphosate is acceptable before they decide to kneel down and pull the weed that is growing too close to a desired plant. these are the kinds of weeds that contact herbicides work well against, but in constrast spraying 10% of the leaves on a desired ornamental should just burn those leaves off without damaging the root system, growth, etc

i'm a huge advocate of these and i don't see why everybody has to use glyphosate. it's doubtful the amenity horticulture industry will budge but that doesn't mean you can't give it a go. report back.
