    Pushing it along....
  3. I have to ++ that one - I'm not a smoker myself but have had a couple of mates use the same trick and it seems to work.
  4. I sort of think that it's less about the curriculum and more how kids are taught. We have an educational process that values the ability to memorise and regurgitate tracts of information - the value of which is getting lower and lower as information becomes more and more freely available. Add to that the fact that my personal experience tells me that people only do well on things they're interested in means that I'd really like to see a focus on elements such as : Scientific method (this is a structured way to formulate ideas and test them) Simulation (here's an problem, apply your thoughts - see what happens and build understanding) Information acquisition (tell me about something, but also tell me how you thought about framing the topic and finding the knowledge) Sponsored inquisition (less structure, but let's get out of the way of an individuals 'sense of wonder' and let them spend some of their time focusing on what really inspires them)

    Loph wiliamsii sale

Yep.... No doubt a genuine offer there. Speaking of which, I also have a large quantity of land which you may be interested in. Guaranteed top notch growing country in an island paradise - and what else would you expect from a place called "Bikini"? Unfortunately you'll have to buy it off the map as you won't be able to inspect it for some time. PM me for details.... Anyhow, I thought I'd drop my $0.02 worth in and say that as the recipient of a number of recent cacti from sharxx101, he really does grow some top class plants that any collector would be happy with....

    Last Acacia ID Request Topic

Prsonally, I really think that it's down to the execution. Apart from an existing (in the first place) and intuitive front end, you really need to spend the time defining the metadata which would be key before any request for identification could be made. For example, for a halfway reliable identification of an Acacia, you'd need to get information such as: Phylloid Length / Width, seed pod length / width, shape of Phylloid, approximate geographic location found (if wild). Flower configuration (when appropriate) and a reference "shape" for the tree would also be pretty useful. The following web page gives an ideaof how specific you can get to narrow down an ID: http://plantnet.rbgs...eWeb/phyll.html In a perfect world, you would require all requests for ID to contain a minimum amount of this information, along with photographic evidence. As well as giving a reasonable chance of a successful ID, it would also provide easily referencable data for searching to ensure that the same tree is not entered twice (with the help of god and a few good mods :-). Good luck with the project - this would be a fantastically powerful tool if built correctly and contributed to by the community. However, if not properly planned I think it'd become a white elephant pretty quickly.
  9. Howdy, So, I've been lucky enough to source two loverly Trich logs (images below). Since I haven't ever grown a cactus before, I thought I'd drop down a couple of points / ask some questions before I unwittingly drive down a path stren with rot infested cacti (if y'all don't mind). Anyhoo - question the first for me would be my confusion regarding needing to keep track of the top and bottom end of the cutting. Some of the resources I've read have made it pretty clear that you can only ever "plant" the bottom side. Other resources say that it doesn't matter. I've done the best to select what I think is the top (based on what appears to be a slightly thinner end of the log), and have cut that on an angle in case we get any rain etc. once it's planted, however I am now panicking! Is there any way to tell for sure which side is up, and does it really matter? Will I potentially grow a new airborne rooting cactus which will do it's best to dig to china as it grows?? Apart from that, once the cuts have suitably dried to a corky consistency, I'll be looking to plant these into pots. My reading has indicating that a soil which won't hang onto water would be the best to use. At this stage, I'm considering a 50 / 50 combination of seed raising mix and small stones - does this sound about right, or is there another mix I should be looking at? Finally - I've read a number of different approaches to initial watering, from "Water once, then not until you see growth" to "Water weekly" right through to "Don't water until you see growth". At this stage, I'm tending to lean towards the latter - really only because that option was based upon an opinion that lack of water will cause root formation and initial growth but I'd really like to get some valued feedback from people who are actually used to growing that beautiful form of flora in this part of the world.... Cheers, Monnsta

Well, I stand well corrected - thanks very much for the prompt response, perlite it is!

First steps into the land of Trich.

Wow... thanks so much for the responses folks, it's very much appreciated... Just to recap where I'm at: I still plan to plant upright, as I don't have a big enough put to put a 35ish cm cut on its side (presuming I can ID the bottom successfully) For my potting mix, I'll be looking to cover the bottom 10% - 20% of the pot with broken bricks etc. to ensure good draning, then fill with a 50% potting / 50% vermiculite mix I'll look to keep the plants in the shade at the very least until I see some signs of new growth Presuming that the "dry / hot" Perth days continue for a while yet I'll probably add a bit of water once per week (I figure this is safe since the whole pot would be dried out on a good day) So... fingers crossed we'll see some growth before the end of the good weather here in Perth..... That's fantastic thanks blowng, I really appreciate the time you spent putting this together..... Just to confirm that I'm on the right track, I've taken a close up of one of the cactus - can you confirm that my assumption regarding the top is correct (please excuse the pirate writing, but I've always felt that everything is always better with a pirate feel )? Thanks again everybody for all your help. M
  12. Does anybody else think that the screams when the "old hag" appears @ approx 1:01 are reminiscent of the animals from "Serveral Spieces of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict", or did I spend too much time in the company of Messers. Waters, Gilmore, Wright, Mason & (at times) Barrett as a youngster?
  13. Yep - I'm a worshipper at the "Church of Job's" (aka Apple), and I recently grabbed myself a shiny new iPad..... The only problem I have is that I can't post topics / PMs etc. on this site. Essentially, when the "New Topic" page is loaded, the "core" text area doesn't seem to be recognised as a valid location to enter text - i.e. I can enter a topic title / description, but can't actually enter any content. I did undertake a quick search on the forums and couldn't turn up anything, and I presume that it's due to the apple proprietary implementation of Javascript so there's probably not much that can be done, but I thought I'd post the issue anyway in case there's an easy way for me to fix it. All suggestions gratefully accepted, with multiple shouts of pintage at a venue of my choosing if you're in Perth and manage to suggest the fix, otherwise I'll have to award all nominated pintage to myself for being such a good listener when I was told the fix

Can't create posts / PMs on iPad

Already executed the Jailbreak, but there's nothing available in the Java space - most likely because there is already an implementation on the iPad which works in most scenarios... And I'm not going to dignify your other statement with an answer Funnily enough after your post I broke out my iPhone and found the formatting was significantly different - on the iPad is pretty much looks like it would on a real computer's browser. So, I'm now in the situation where I could write updates on the iPhone, but not on the iPad.... Anyhoo, I've sort of managed a workaround. I can enter new posts / reply to old by disabling JavaScript.... Of course the only problem then is that I can't put any rich text, pretty picutres etc. Looks like I'll be breaking the laptop out every now and then.... And for the record..... the laptop isn't an Apple

Hello and A. Acuminata free to good home

Cheers for the warm welcome folks.....
  16. Hi all, So... I'm a some time reader.... recent registrant, (now) first time poster, and I thought I'd kick off with a give away for my fellow Perthians. That's right folks.... a genuine, no-nonsense give away just like yer granny used to do - although if somebody was to respond by throwing some caapi my way I'd be a fairly happy feller .... So.... I've sown some Acacia Acuminata / Raspberry Jam Wattle seed and have had more success than I was expecting considering my black thumb, to the point that it looks like I'll have 5 seedlings or so more than I need, and I thought I'd open this up to my fellow WAliens. As you can see from the attached files, the seeds are either in peat blocks or pots - all ready for a direct plant, and some of them already have their second leaves. Due largely to the fact that the roots are starting to bust through the bottom of the peat blocks, I'd like to give these away this weekend if possible - first come first serve, you just need to be prepared to make a trip up Joondalup way to pick up. I also do have some seed left over which I'm happy to give away if you miss out on a seedling, just post / PM if you're interested.... Monnnsta
