I have to ++ that one - I'm not a smoker myself but have had a couple of mates use the same trick and it seems to work.

I sort of think that it's less about the curriculum and more how kids are taught. We have an educational process that values the ability to memorise and regurgitate tracts of information - the value of which is getting lower and lower as information becomes more and more freely available. Add to that the fact that my personal experience tells me that people only do well on things they're interested in means that I'd really like to see a focus on elements such as : Scientific method (this is a structured way to formulate ideas and test them) Simulation (here's an problem, apply your thoughts - see what happens and build understanding) Information acquisition (tell me about something, but also tell me how you thought about framing the topic and finding the knowledge) Sponsored inquisition (less structure, but let's get out of the way of an individuals 'sense of wonder' and let them spend some of their time focusing on what really inspires them) -

Yep.... No doubt a genuine offer there. Speaking of which, I also have a large quantity of land which you may be interested in. Guaranteed top notch growing country in an island paradise - and what else would you expect from a place called "Bikini"? Unfortunately you'll have to buy it off the map as you won't be able to inspect it for some time. PM me for details.... Anyhow, I thought I'd drop my $0.02 worth in and say that as the recipient of a number of recent cacti from sharxx101, he really does grow some top class plants that any collector would be happy with....

Last Acacia ID Request Topic

Prsonally, I really think that it's down to the execution. Apart from an existing (in the first place) and intuitive front end, you really need to spend the time defining the metadata which would be key before any request for identification could be made. For example, for a halfway reliable identification of an Acacia, you'd need to get information such as: Phylloid Length / Width, seed pod length / width, shape of Phylloid, approximate geographic location found (if wild). Flower configuration (when appropriate) and a reference "shape" for the tree would also be pretty useful. The following web page gives an ideaof how specific you can get to narrow down an ID: http://plantnet.rbgs...eWeb/phyll.html In a perfect world, you would require all requests for ID to contain a minimum amount of this information, along with photographic evidence. As well as giving a reasonable chance of a successful ID, it would also provide easily referencable data for searching to ensure that the same tree is not entered twice (with the help of god and a few good mods :-). Good luck with the project - this would be a fantastically powerful tool if built correctly and contributed to by the community. However, if not properly planned I think it'd become a white elephant pretty quickly. -
Well, I stand well corrected - thanks very much for the prompt response, perlite it is!

Wow... thanks so much for the responses folks, it's very much appreciated... Just to recap where I'm at: I still plan to plant upright, as I don't have a big enough put to put a 35ish cm cut on its side (presuming I can ID the bottom successfully) For my potting mix, I'll be looking to cover the bottom 10% - 20% of the pot with broken bricks etc. to ensure good draning, then fill with a 50% potting / 50% vermiculite mix I'll look to keep the plants in the shade at the very least until I see some signs of new growth Presuming that the "dry / hot" Perth days continue for a while yet I'll probably add a bit of water once per week (I figure this is safe since the whole pot would be dried out on a good day) So... fingers crossed we'll see some growth before the end of the good weather here in Perth..... That's fantastic thanks blowng, I really appreciate the time you spent putting this together..... Just to confirm that I'm on the right track, I've taken a close up of one of the cactus - can you confirm that my assumption regarding the top is correct (please excuse the pirate writing, but I've always felt that everything is always better with a pirate feel )? Thanks again everybody for all your help. M
