    Vipassana

i'm doing a 3-day course at the end of the week...have done a few..have sworn i'd never go back there a couple times too ;-) i wouldn't say it's exactly 100% ideology free...it is for sure a non-denominational practice, which is emphasised many times, etc. but you will still hear about buddhist concepts and lots of words in Pali. In the early morning sittings there is a tape of Pali chanting. At the start of the course you "take refuge" just for the time you are there...which is taking refuge in the buddha, dharma and sangha. It is all quite acceptable but just thought I'd mention it. The only thing that really gets me is the amount of "air time" goenka gets...I get tired of waiting for the tapes to finish to get on with it. for your own benefit, be totally up-front and honest on the application form. just generally speaking..anyone with unresolved issues of depression, anxiety, trauma, etc. i would personally strongly recommend against courses like these. they would probably recommend against it as well, which they have a lot of experience in assessing peoples suitability, and i would trust that as much as possible. (i know some people choose not to list drug use or other things on the application, worrying they may not be accepted. but i think it's best to leave this call up to them) also - you are right to be apprehensive about 10 days ;-) it can be tough. but although you sign an agreement saying you will stay for the entire duration of the course...they really can't stop you from leaving. though they do have good reason for advising against sudden decisions to leave. i'm in victoria...and there are 2 dharma centres (not Goenka centres) around here that i know of that do 1-day and 3-day vipassana courses for people of any level of experience. the 1-day is relatively informal with a shared lunch and dharma talk i think. i'm sure there are similar things in most states. this might be more beneficial for some people

  4. yeah aurorix=moclobemide when taking the amino acids, they need to be consumed without other amino acids/proteins present. protein powders, etc, won't be helpful this way you need to assess which ones are suitable as well, which is based on what form the depression takes. can write more later but the use of aminos for depression/anxiety has been discussed here in depth

    some recent experiments

thanks...interesting info & formulas will look into peony root can you recommend a comprehensive TCM book that includes foundational concepts?
  6. i have used SSRI's a couple times over the past 12 years when i felt desperate basically...but eventually when i felt that need for pharmacological intervention, i ended up always going back to moclobemide (an MAOI). this starts working straight away because there are no slow neuroadaptive changes that need to take place. aside from depression i've had equally intense anxiety, and the main side effect from the moclobemide was a lot more energy, which could translate into increased anxiety. but that was tolerable. also i had mild-moderate difficulties with falling asleep and then sometimes more intense dreams. but usually it was what i needed to get out of a funk, get motivated to make more broad changes, and the change of perspective would suddenly open my eyes to how depressed i had been and how badly it was affecting me and others. somehow when it was all at its worst, i just stopped caring and stopped seeing things clearly. i should not fail to mention there was substance issues involved in all of this. i never really took the moclobemide for more than maybe 2 months. technically it's potentially risky to be combining amino acids such as tryptophan and tyrosine with antidepressant meds..but it can be a way to fine tune the effects. you need to be well informed before playing around though if you haven't tried using amino acids already, i would definitely recommend doing that first

stopping those sort of med's overnight will have unfavorable effects for a lot of people..it's a very sudden alteration to whatever balance is there...not sure if that was the case, but maybe don't attribute 100% the rebound depression after stopping the meds as an indication that the meds were the only thing keeping you at basline....hope that makes sense good luck mate

    Triphala

ah, for that purpose i'm sure it'll be fine...if it's like Zandu brand or something, the main thing to check is how long it's been on the shelf... one thing that comes to mind is 777 oil. have read of good results for psoriasis

    Triphala

as with all your creations, i am curious about your formula VS hmm just to ramble...there is also trijata/trisugandha meaning 3 aromatics = cinnamon, cassia leaf, cardamom then there is tritrika = "three threes" which is trikatu, triphala and trijata together

    Triphala

didnt notice this til now email me if you want any "ayurvedic" herbs or larger quantity of triphala..it's a bit under $25 for 1kg. i noticed austral herbs sells it now as well. beware of some of the cheapy brands at the indian grocers...i've been told that some leave some of the seeds in before grinding. also, there are many different grades of each fruit. usually bought from those places for laxative effect, which they will provide. it's not always equal parts..some companies have a specific ratio for their product..but the ratio is based on a person's individual balance of doshas. eg, if pitta is high, there is more amalaki tst you're thinking of trikatu (tri=3 katu=pungent...black pepper, ginger, long pepper) chaturushna ("4 heating") adds long pepper root etc
  13. it never really pans out though...a much as a hedonist chases pleasure is as much as s/he despises & tries to circumvent pain..it's the chase itself that sets this up. the spiritual path embodies accepting whatever comes but it doesn't mean you enjoy the ecstasy any less..there's just not so much wasting of time seeking it and fretting when it's gone ?

    PSYCHONAUT DATING SITE?

i would if i cared enough plus i dont like polls would have to think about labels and checkboxes and kinsey scores give it time lofty...are you early-20's something ? it takes a while before love is not so highly-conditional anyway...there's always something. saying you have a drug problem could just mean "you don't spend enough of your time validating my ego" at the same time, don't self-identify too much with the things you like doing and taking...then the inevitable compromises that torsten mentioned, will come a lot easier (btw, the sort of person you're looking for probably doesn't post face pics )

    Dream suppressors

i'm not sure how long you were taking the ssri's for previously, but it does take at least a few weeks to a couple of months for neuroadaptive changes to kick in to see the meds having a more serotonergic effect, whereas initially they can be stimulating. i'm not sure if herbs like skullcap, valerian, chamomile, lemonbalm and ashwagandha are contraindicated with ssri's, but those are the ones i'd check are safe and start experimenting two other things i'd try- 15 mins meditation or relaxation (either body scan or progressive muscular relaxation PMR) and essential oils before sleeping. look up the typically calming/sedative oils, and if you're not familiar with them, go to a healthfood store and sniff the testers to find one you know works for you. you can keep a tissue with a few drops of the oil inside/near your pillow. http://www.holisticonline.com/Remedies/Sle...romatherapy.htm is a good list hopefully you can do/are doing some form of counselling...it always makes sense to combine meds with some counselling. massage can be very helpful for some people also sorry, i know you were asking for specific herbs

    PSYCHONAUT DATING SITE?

sometimes the issue can be with the methods of consumption. like getting tired of watching someone suck on a massive bong/holding breath/smoke everywhere (or even if they smoke outside, the disgusting rotting cabbage smell that follows them around or permeates from their mouth despite repeated brushing)/hearing bubbling or scissors going "snip snip snip/clink clink" all night in the other room every 20 minutes personally i find watching people inhaling a particular gas out of balloons for extended periods of time can be a bit creepy and gross/disturbing especially when other substances are eliciting heavy sweating and leg spasms etc, lying in a massive pile of bulbs along with hearing the bulbs clinking in the boxes, and cracking and balloons inflating for like 2 hours when you have a fairly minor issue/concern with someone's substance use, these things can really push you over the edge after a while

    Autoimmunity sucks

things that come to mind just off the top of my head simple stuff: ginger, garlic, galangal, turmeric, fenugreek (if using extracts, use broad spectrum), castor oil other stuff Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi) Commiphora mukul (Guggulu) Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense) Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) Asparagus racemosus (Shatavari) Vitex negundo (Nirgundi) Pluchea lanceolata (Rasna) Dashamula ("ten roots formula". Decoction taken orally, used as an enema. Processed oil used externally. "wine" used for nervous conditions) Shilajit (black asphaltum) Amla (Emblica officinalis) Licorice you're already on to? Many of those herbs have combined immunomodulatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory properties There are a lot of Ayurvedic formulas based around guggulu. Kaishore guggulu (guggulu and guduchi, plus other herbs), for example, may be appropriate
