  1. also I think that "white shit" on your peres is just some of their waxy cuticle peeling off - I don't have alot of experience growing them, but I thought it was just like trees shedding bark - not usually anything to worry about. The older plants get more woody-looking stems, so I think the white crackly/peeling skin is just an intermediate stage to that.

  2. That doesn't look too bad - are you sure it's not just variegation?

I had white patches appearing on some cacti awhile back - turned out to be something called "salt lock" or "nutrient lockout". I flushed the pots & replaced the media on the worst affected ones - and also stopped using salt ferts - they all recovered quickly and it hasn't happened again.

  3. Skellum, if someone has posted identifying info about another member (intentionally or otherwise) you can:

    (1) PM that person & ask them to edit their post

...and/or (if it is an urgent matter or the person does not respond)

    (2) report the post & ask the mods to edit/delete it

Instead, you've decided to address this by writing a half dozen additional public posts on the topic, drawing more attention than the original post ever would have - which seems like a somewhat bizarre approach to the matter.

  4. I hadn't read this thread before & still haven't watched the Vice vid, so apologies if this is discussed there, I'm just responding to the OP, which notes significant overlap between ichthyoallyeinotoxism and ciguatera in the fish known to cause those effects. Anyone who is interested in this please read up about how nasty (& potentially permanent) the neurotoxicity from ciguatera can be before you go experimenting with this.

These effects were only produced by a 10% cocoa diet whereas a 4% cocoa dose was insufficient to influence the phenotype of mesenteric lymph nodes

    Quote

Results showed that the 10% cocoa-enriched diet, but not the 4% dose, was able to decrease serum immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM, and IgA concentrations ... Moreover, it was observed that the minimum dose to achieve such an effect was 5% cocoa in the diet

I dunno, 10% of your diet is a LOT of cocoa. I understand why researchers use megadoses of things (to see quicker & more obvious effects), but these don't always scale down neatly in a nice dose-dependent manner - some drug effects only occur at high doses, because certain receptors or transporters or enzymes become overloaded. I would want to see more studies using a range of doses before I got excited about this.

Best of luck with the kombucha, yesterday I found a forgotten bottle of chilli-cacao kombucha at the back of my fridge, hot damn that is tasty stuff! All of those converted amines make for great umami flavour - it is like a natural flavour-enhancer!

  6. There are some circumstances where having the unwanted mirror isomer present can fuck with your desired reaction - I don't think this particular pathway is one of those where it should be a big issue, but yeah, if it's easy to buy just the L isomer then there's no reason to risk the horsefeed.

Unlikely that the taurine would interfere in the same kind of way - I wouldn't worry about it. I think they add it because of studies which show that it can help to reduce neurotoxicity from tryptophan OD (link).

  7. If it doesn't specify then it is probably racemic (i.e. a mix of both isomers) - you might be able to get a definite answer from the vendor? But if you can't, maybe take that into account when looking at price: that the unspecified one might be only 50% the isomer you want.

Well, it was true for those ten mice in that study. But there is a reason that commercial pharmaceuticals need to be tested on humans as well - and this is it. From scattered reports coming in from the few people who have tried it, it sounds more sedative than opioid/analgesic. However it might work in this case where mild analgesia & muscle relaxation are desirable - only one way to find out. It wouldn't be top of my list of things to try though.

I second all of saylor twift's ideas - and Lyrica could also be worth a shot if the nerve problems are bad enough (or maybe its precursor gabapentin instead, if money is very tight) - sorry I don't know of any plants that do the same job.

Oil of Wintergreen is great for sprained muscles & inflammation - it is kind of a topical version of aspirin (i.e. anti-inflammatory) & is an active ingredient in many "tiger-balm" type products & liniments. You can buy at the chemist or Chinese herbalist. Mix with other oils if you like or just rub it straight onto sore muscles & aching joints for immediate relief.

DCHIW when you remember its time to take ya meds but can't remember if you have actually taken them already...

More times than I can recall. I did what the horseman said mostly: grabbed one of those 7-day pill cases in the end (actually I have two now, for morning/evening doses). But I used to just get a marker and write on the foil backing each tablet: Tues AM, Tues PM, Wed AM... blah, blah.. (I still do that for pills that are too big for the case, or need to be kept in the fridge or whatever)... Then the only struggle is keeping track of what day it is...

When I got more mobile I also made up a little pack with at least a day's worth of everything and kept it in my wallet - so if I went out in the morning without taking my meds, I would have always have a backup on me.

Mirbelia speciosa is a beautiful plant, who wouldn't want one?

According to the ANBG web page: "M. speciosa strikes readily from tip cuttings" - so that one should be a breeze. You'll have those pretty pink pea flowers in no time.

As for your other request, I see straight through your flimsy drug code. I don't care if your E is from China or Chittaway young man, asking for it is against forum rules.

  11. @Sallubrious, it probably wouldn't work for us, but I know a guy who just has some disc issues and he uses an inversion table:

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQd5B47rjHljY3fqXEWMSu

    As for the rest:

When I was less mobile I set alarms throughout the night so that I could get up and start heading for the bathroom half an hour before I needed to be there. It's a pity that chamber pots have gone out of fashion.

Todays DCHIW: some arsehole shoves you just as you are stepping down from the bus so that you fall the rest of the way onto your bad (well, worse) leg. Was the motherfucking WALKING CANE not a clue as to why I might be moving slowly, dickwad? Were you really in that much of a hurry to get where you're going that you had to knock over a cripple to get there faster? He did briefly pause to ask me if I was ok when I swore when I fell, then skedaddled very quickly when he saw the look on my face. Probably for the best. Constantly carrying around 3 feet of metal pipe on buses full of shitheels... it is an awful temptation at times.

    ALL cacoa/cocoa ( same thing

afaik "cocoa" is the roasted-and-usually-alkalised product, while "cacao" is the raw (or supposedly-raw) version. They do taste different and have slightly-different properties - I think the alkalised cocoa is more fat-soluble, so makes smoother-tasting drinking chocolate & so on. The raw cacao is more nutritious but also has a sharper more bitter taste that not everyone likes - I actually think it tastes great, but if you were used to the more processed kind it might be an acquired taste.

  13. Don't you hate it when your spine is so fucked that you can't lie down in any position and have to sleep sitting up.

Protip#1: prop yourself up with cushions to stop from toppling over during the night.

Protip#2: dope yourself up with cough syrup & panadeine forte to stop from tearing your own spine out & throwing it in the garbage in frustration.

  14. Have you checked out Loving Earth?

They seem pretty ethically sound and have very nice criollo cacao products in small quantities or bulk. Not sure how the pricing compares to the ones you've looked at, but I've got some of their cacao powder in my kitchen if you want me to send you a sample of it to try.

I actually don't like most of their chocolates (I think it's the coconut sugar they use for sweetener - gives it a weird sour taste), but all of the raw cacao products they carry are pretty damn good. The cacao nibs are so full of delicious cocoa butter that they're almost like eating little chips of dark chocolate.

  15. Freakazoid: you're on the internet - you do know that they have porn here, right? There are entire websites which are nothing but er...titillating details. So to speak.

and MoonUnit, hey, at least you own it. As for your offer sorry mate, but Hillbilly advertised leather shorts - there's no competing with that.

Flat earth billboards going up and people doing their own independent research.

This is great even if the flat earth theory gets proven wrong this level of critical thinking and questioning of what's around us is great I can't see any negatives here.

The negatives are that almost no one actually knows how to research stuff, so their "independent research" consists of watching Youtube videos. And then they complain that scientists don't take them seriously. No, we don't take you seriously. Not because there is some conspiracy, but because you have no real evidence to prove your point - you haven't done any work to establish it. Do you know how long it took scientists to get people to believe the earth was round? Fucking centuries.

So flat-earthers, I'll propose a deal: you put your money where your mouth is, and get some of your own satellites into space (so you can see what shape it is without having to worry about the gubmint tampering with your images), and put in just a fraction of the work that the "spherical-earthers" did in their day, and then I'll start listening to what you have to say. I don't blindly believe anything which has a "science" stamp on it - that's not what science is about at all, and if you read the threads where we are discussing scientific papers I can be harshly critical. But I have too much respect for the work others have done to ignore it all because someone doesn't want to believe in optical illusions. The whole thing just reeks of ego - "this is what my eyes tell me, and I cannot be wrong!"

If you want a cause where the science probably really does need to be updated, try gut flora. There is increasing evidence that gut flora have a significant effect on your mental health & a wide range of diseases, especially autoimmune ones. This is a field where more attention, and pushing for more government funding, could actually give us some answers which will improve the quality of life for millions (or billions) of people. So if you really need a "science is wrong" campaign in your life, why not choose one that might actually help people?

  18. Oh, I actually meant doing the primary ferment with coconut cream - I have seen this sold (Living Coconut Kefir), so I know it is possible. Not sure what kind of culture they use for it though - whether it's more similar to a milk-kefir or water-kefir colony in composition - I gather it's some homegrown adaptation of one of them.

I realise now that my comment was ambiguous, but I didn't mean "why doesn't coconut-milk-kefir exist?", I meant "why isn't a cacao-flavoured version available?"

  19. Did you read the thread directly below this one, Legality of Catha edulis in NSW ?

As I understand it, the legal situation for Argyreia nervosa is similar.

  20. As I read that article I was nodding along, as it agrees with a lot of thoughts I have had about "kids these days" and how technology is affecting their brains and our society.

And then I started wondering if I was using technology to create my own little filter bubble of people who reflect my own opinions back at me, and confirmation-biasing those to boot.

And then I started wondering why I even knew terms like that...

...and decided it was time to go play outside.

    ...(and maybe buy some drugs)
