  1. I have been seeing a few of these popping up around Sydney lately, it took me a long time to even get a good look at one to realise it was a poppy at first, as I am usually drivinng past them at 60-80kmh.

Today the traffic stopped just right so I was able to take a very hasty and crappy phone pic.

Any ideas on what they might be? Regular poppies or something more interesting? They are kinda light pink with a darker purple spot near the base of the petals - reminds me of pap. somniferum in a way, but i'm far from an expert on poppies.

Please excuse the crappy quality of the photos...I'll try to get a better one...

  2. Chinense varieties will last several years if you take care of them through winter. If it's only a seedling, it will want to stay alive so it can set fruit. Just avoid watering it too much, pick off any pods it tries to produce, and protect it from frost.

For plants that have already been through a summer, cut them right back to the main stems and don't leave any foliage or fruit on them. Stop watering, unless the soil is bone dry, and they will start to shoot again as soon as it warms up. Then you can recommence watering and fertilise.

Usually the second season is the most productive as they already have a well established root system and can put all their energy into making pods of pain!

  3. When I was studying botany at unsw back in 92 there was a jar of preserved semilanceata specimens that was collected in roseville Sydney back in the 80s...I'm sure they are around but definitely not common.
