    Grafts -Photos & Updates

LW seedlings on pachanoi grafted a week ago And a L. Decipiens on pachanoi grafted in May grafted 60 days old
  6. Mine get stepped on about once a week and seem to do fine. It tends to encourage them to spread or pup more.
  7. Sempervivum grow really thick here and choke weeds out. And they're very cold hardy here as well.

  9. What are these? My trich's get em all the time and are more prominent in the evening hours. Hardly visible during the heat of the day. Not rot or fungus and it doesn't seem to harm my cacti......

    Black spots/streaks on tricho's

I use a small amount of coir, topsoil, composted cow manure and garden soil. Then there's lots of perlite, pumice, crushed limestone, crushed lava rock and coarse builders sand. I get a lot of rain so it has to drain and dry out fast. A good soaking dries up in two days as the clay pots wick the moisture any excess moisture. Lime, bone meal, alfalfa meal, greensand, kelp meal and lots of organic slow release ferts are added in as we'll in very small amounts. An article I read about tricho growing had a small bit about the streaking and a theory as to it's appearance. "Pots tend to go a little acid when plants are wintering dormant. You can take advantage of this acid condition in the early spring with a “post dormancy” treatment for the first spring watering: 1 rounded teaspoon S.T.E.M. (Soluble Trace Element Mix, available from nursery supply companies) and 2-1/2 level tablespoons Epsom salt in 5 gallons of water. Soak pots with this solution; let them sit in the cool early spring weather, good sun, for 7-10 days. STEM and Epsom salt creates a temporary low pH condition (below 6.8) where trace elements will absorb rapidly. You will see thin dark blue (almost black sometimes) streaks moving up the creases in the stalk as the trace elements hits the chloroplasts. Cacti are typically heavy trace element feeders. "

    Black spots/streaks on tricho's

Not hail or any other mechanical damage. It's summer here and it's warm so I don't think it's cool weather either. Humidity is 50%+ almost year round and we've been getting rain but they dry out between showers. I was thinking it may be from low soil ph. Which is then increasing the uptake of micronutrients. Because when the streaks start they come from the bottom up and you can almost watch them move up the plant. I think I see an experiment coming up soon......

    grafting seedlings

You can also graft the bottom half of the seedlings too. Since it is inverted it will pup like mad. Scop x Pach inverted graft And peruvianus BK 08612.9 seedling grafted too Pach in the spring....

    grafting seedlings

You can graft to a small pup. You won't get the crazy fast growth of the Pere but it will work. I've done this a few times as emergency grafts and they turned out fine

Sacred succulents lists a clone a and b crest for Pach. They have a listed as having short columns with a fanned crest while b tends to be brain or coral shaped and stay low, generally not having a column at all.

    Help with Ariocarpus graft

That's kinda the way I was leaning Got. I'd hate to lose one o them anyway. They seem so woody and coarse I imagine they would be difficult to graft at this age anyway. Thanks for the input guys. I'd rather not risk losing one on account of me wanting to try and graft one anyhow.

    Help with Ariocarpus graft

I was recently gifted 5 Ariocarpus trigonus plants. They look to be 5-7 yrs. old I would guess if not older. The friend who gifted them to me didn't know much about them as he had them passed down to him from a cacti nerd friend. They got sunburnt and he decided to give them to me. He shipped them bare root to me but they had to have been bare root for around a month because they were severely dehydrated. I have them all potted up and have got them growing a little now. My question is if I wanted to graft them where would I cut the ariocarpus at just below the tubercles or on the subterranean stem? Or should I just let them grow this season and wait to graft next growing season? It is summer here so temps are hot and they are growing not dormant.... Thanks for any help guys Oh.... And this is my first topic post *EG85*

What shade of green should my willi seedlings be?

I've had a mix of colors with all batches of my loph's. most will be lime to dark green and a couple will be orange to red-purple. I guess some are just genetically weaker to high light levels at that early of an age.
