  2. Hi bot6,

My seedlings start there life under a 90watt MH light in a humidity chamber, after the seeds have germinated & there roots take hold (about 3 to 6 weeks) I top dress the containers with gravel/coarse sand & take the lid of the chamber, I continue to leave them under the light for another 4-6 weeks (with lid off) & water as required. After this stage they get moved into a green house with 50/50 clothe. I find leaving them under the light with lid off for that extra time really helps reduce the stress of the green house. I found that if I moved seedling strait from a humidity chamber under lights to an out of the humidity chamber greenhouse set up it has stressed my seedling causing them to redden up & stall growth.

    Good luck with your seedlings.

    Cheers

  3. Weird as "Knowing, understanding, growing Turbinicarpus - Rapicactus" by David Donati and Carlo Zanovella was released in 2005, they go through all known taxa and have no reference to varieties or subspecies of horripilus.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Can you recommend sites, book etc that are being used by the majority to name there plants. The thing I find most frustrating about naming cacti is that it still seems to be undergoing a lot of change & no one seems to agree. As a collector & not an expert I would just like it if there was a Cactus King who new all the facts & everyone agreed  that way I look at his book & know for sure whats going on.

  4. When you go to reply in the "Reply to this topic" you will see an option in the bottom right hand corner saying "More Reply Options" click on this and it will take you to a page were you can type your reply, under that is a section it says add files. Add the files (photos) you want there.

I hope that helps, I am pretty crap when it comes to computer though.

    Cheers

  5. The key was done in 2007, as it says "this key is based on". If you read through it you would see most of the information is current and is base on newer findings.

Anyway I am just trying to put a tag on this plant, I agree that horripilus fits best. I will add more photos when it as put on some more growth.

Thanks again for your help prier.

    Cheers

  6. Hello nicechrisman,

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you have a nice collection (love to see some photos), if you spend enough time here I am sure you will end up collecting some nice named clones, members here a very friendly & helpful.

  7. Nice looking plants magical9, I saw the photos of the nursery you got them from, man that is an awesome place, I wish I could go and visit a place like that.

Sh*t you guys are good at identifying cacti!! As soon as I saw the second pic I thought it was Polaskia chichipe for sure. If you get time could you please point out how you worked out it was a Pachycereus, Thanks.

    Cheers

  8. Hey prier, thanks for your reply.

I found the Turb key by typing in "key for the Turbinicarpus species" it is the first one that comes up by demon.co.uk, sorry I have know idea how to add links. If you look at this page & look click on T. horripilus there is a list of related Turbs at the bottom of the page, here is the key for t.horripilus wrobelianus.

After looking at the flower what are your thoughts?

    Cheers

  9. Well the Turb in question flowered for me today.

@prier, it looks like T. horripilus fits (other than radials) so thank you for your suggestion . There is one question that I had about this, when I look at a key for Turbinicarpus it says that T.horripilus has 8 to 10 radial spines, my plants have a lot more than that. My question is, would it have more radials because it is a young plant or does it fall under the name T.horripilus ssp. wrobelianus which has more radials? Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Here are some photos.

  10. There has been a lot of replies which is awesome, I hope members keep adding there successes & failures with cross pollination.

Hey Jox, I doubt you could successfully cross Turbinicarpus and Copiapoa as they may be too far apart in their relationship; Turbinicarpus being in the Cacteae tribe, while Copiapoa is in the Notocacteae tribe. From what I've gathered if the species aren't in the same tribe they can't cross, and even if of the same tribe the production of fertile seed isn't a given. I'm interested in seeing solid support for intergeneric hybrids of different tribes.

    ~Michael~

I thought it would be a very long shot but as they were both flowering at the same time I thought it can't hurt to try. They have both set a lot of flowers in the past & never produced seed so I am certain they are not self-fertile.

GOOD NEWS THE TURB HAS SET SEED :o, I am not sure if this is hybrid seed or if the Copiapoa pollen has enabled the turb to self pollinate, I can't wait to grow these seeds out to find out. Here are some photos of the Turb's seed, it did come from the flower I crossed.

  12. I have never use heat pads but everyone will have different conditions. I grow seedlings under a MH light through winter so the light provides enough heat, in summer I don't need extra heat were I live. I normally shade my seedling under 50% shade clothe for the first month.

    Cheers

PS; I am referring to growing cacti seeds in my posts.
