Found a bluing Gymnopilus

Recommended Posts

Today I was going for a fungus hunt and found, among other things, a bluing Gymnopilus species...or what I believe to be so anyway. I'm pretty certain they're not spectabilis / juonius. They are a smaller Gym and they have a thinner stem. More a 'classical shroom' kind of structure, but still with the base of the stem tapering back inwards. When I first picked them I noticed that there were blue aborts near the base. And after a few minutes there was very clear blue bruising at the base where they were damaged from picking. Unfortunatley it doesn't show up too well in the pics but it was bluing as much as you'd see in some Psilocybes. These were found in the South Island of NZ. Fruiting prolifically.

thats pretty odd looking - it looks almost like a lepiota although im sure its not.

Are you sure taht is a gymnopilus species? Have you checked the spore print colour? Im used to gyms being orange rather than yellow.

I'm pretty certain they're gymno's. Definitley not lepiota's. I didn't take spore prints, but the stem colour and texture and shape, scaly cap, substrate, and bluing reaction suggested to my 'gymno's'. I might go back and grab one for a spore print.

Interesting - if they are they arent any species ive ever seen before - might be an idea to get them to Inski so he can have a look at the cystidia and spores to identify it - might be a new species.

Check the sporeprint colour to be safe i guess as well.
