mushfun Posted August 10, 2015 The female ginkgo is a rare thing around my parts. Council pull them out when they do appear, the gentle folk are offended by the fruits unique odour.
flora Posted August 11, 2015 Quota filled with the first five above Mushfun I'm assuming you're not putting your hand up In Australia even ginkgo farms tend to grow only male clones for leaf production, at least that's what one ginkgo farmer told me. But the nuts are considered a valuable food source in Asia. Where I usually go there's several females on the street but I was too late this year I think they all got cleaned up These here seeds come from the biggest tree I know of For anyone who missed out - I collect them every year so I'll be sure to offer them again here . washing them is the worst part :/ lol
mushfun Posted August 11, 2015 I'm ok for ginkgo got a couple of trees going a few years ago, not sure of the sec yet though, how I get at least one of each. I had read the seed were eatable but have not tried them. Yeah the seed pulp is an interesting smell to say the least, not sure if love it or hate it. flora Posted August 11, 2015 The flesh can burn the hands a bit As for germination I hav read that cold strata can be good but I've never bothered anything fancy These have been in my fridge for about a month so I wouldn't leave them too long before planting as they do dry oUt. The seedlings are tough little buggers though. They transplant well as I have experienced from pulling up ones germed under the big tree
