Should I have seen more growth?

I did these grafts in April 2013. I have attached original and current photots to show the difference. I just feel that they haven't grown at the rate I thought they would. They don't get watered over winter and in summer I use seaweed extract every couple of weeks during summer. The shorter one has had some vertical growth but the overall diameter of it hasn't dramatically increased. The taller one hasn't really had substantial growth for the time period. Anything different I should be doing? Different fertilizer? repot? Cheers.

Should I have seen more growth?

Cheers everyone. Instead of using the seaweed extract I will try watering with a mild hydroponic solution. Searching through the forum I can see that I have possibly underwatered and under fed them. Once every couple of weeks over sumer is clearly not enough.

Should I have seen more growth?

They get about 8 hours full sun in the summer. Maybe I will try connect the vascular cambium better next time I do a graft.

Should I have seen more growth?

No pups from the scions, however the rootstock shoots one out every now and then. I will up my feed/water slightly and see if it makes a difference.

rustica and heimia seeds for some cacti seeds?

I also have a range of other seed, peganum harmala, a few different datura, E. sinica a couple acacia? Doesn't HAVE to be pach. or peru, anything capable of being used as grafting stock for lophs. would be good. I've tried grafting with established scions and rootstock but want to try everything from seed.
  7. I am yet to try my hand at growing some cacti from seed. Possibly some trich. Pach or peru would be good. Have some heimia salicifolia and nicotiana rustica seeds which i harvested last year if someone wanted to trade.

    Perth: caapi and/or viridis wanted

Cheers for the reply. I have carthagenesis seeds, I have tried many times to germinate them (I planted about 4 seeds that were fresh around 7 months ago but still no germination. I tried two with washing the residue off the outside with bleach and two without washing.) but with no success. Was hoping I could get established plants.

    Circumcision causes autism and ADHD?

Sorry got my definitions crossed. Either way, a lot of recent studies are swaying towards ASD prevalence in boys being more towards the fact that young girls have a different set of social skills than boys, therefore recognising the condition in boys is slightly easier to diagnose. I have in no way got a great deal of knowledge of neurological or genetic diseases, but from a general scientific point of view I just think saying circumcision increases the risk of ASD in a sample size of 340, 000 is vague. As I said, 5, 000 in 340, 000 is 1.47%. The current estimate being 1% of people being affected by ASD, so boys who have undergone circumcision only increase the risk by 0.47%. Not exactly definitive.

    Circumcision causes autism and ADHD?

It's not sex selective, if that was the case then girls would not have it; it's simply more prevalent in boys than girls. Some studies believe one of the reasons girls are diagnosed with it less often is, with lower order spectrum disorders, that girls by nature have quite differing social skills to boys, especially at a younger age. Much of the research into ASD is still young (awareness of the condition not really coming into light until the early nineties). So to say circumcision even increases the risk is vague. The approximation of population with ASD sits at around 1%, so even 5,000 out of 340, 000 is only an increase of 0.47%. One study containing 340 000 boys to determine the risk of circumcision to increase the likelihood of getting ASD is not something to cite. That is such a small sample size, considering the scope and broad nature of the condition. Meng-Chuan Lai, Michael V. Lombardo, Bonnie Auyeung, Bhismadev Chakrabarti, Simon Baron-Cohen, Sex/Gender Differences and Autism: Setting the Scene for Future Research, Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Volume 54, Issue 1, January 2015, Pages 11-24, ISSN 0890-8567, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jaac.2014.10.003. Circumcision causes autism and ADHD?

    Correlation does not equal causation.

    Circumcision causes autism and ADHD?

That is still only 1.47%. A study published in the JAMA Pediatrics says that the increase is due to the change in reporting of the condition. Autism is not sex selective so how can it be related to circumcision. Stefan N. Hansen, Diana E. Schendel, Erik T. Parner. Explaining the Increase in the Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders. First attempt at grafting loph.

This advice is from limited experience with grafting. The smaller your scion the harder the graft due to the increased difficulty in matching the vascular cambium. From memory I just cut the scion where it meets the dirt. As long as your vascular bundles match between your rootstock and scion and you made cuts with sterilised equipment you will be fine. You can graft the root-tip also, a bit ugly but hey if it works.

    First attempt at grafting loph.

Hi all! I'm fairly new to all of this so some help would be appreciated. I've tried my first loph. graft I'm hoping all goes well. If anyone with more experience can tell me anything that may look wrong would be much appreciated. I used all sterile equipment and made sure there are no air bubbles between the scion and the rootstock. Is it now just a matter of wrapping it up in a plastic bag for some humidity and keeping it out of direct light for two weeks?

    Aquaculture Thread

Just thought I would share my ethnobotanical aquaponic setup. It has been cycling for around 8 weeks. Nitrite has spiked for the last couple of days at around 2.0 ppm (have added 1.5 part per thousand of sea salt to mitigate) and nitrates are steadily climbing (at around 20 ppm tested today). I decided to paint it black due to it's full position in the sun in a bid to prevent excessive algal growth during the initial cycling period. I currently have basil and lettuce on the left side, chilli in the centre and on the right are a couple Rivea corymbosa seedlings, Khat seedlings, and some Datura. I recently planted some Acacia, Mexicana agremone, Sida cordifolia and a few others that I didn't label so will have to wait when they sprout. Any others have any experience with aquaponic ethnobotanicals? What grows well? I have been surprised with the Khat plant that I put in (the largish plant at the right front). It was getting a bit weedy in soil with most of the growth only happening at the tips. It has been about 4 weeks and there is growth all up the stems and at the base (which is where I have cloned the seedlings from). During the cycling I have around 8 yabbies and a few Silver Perch. Once the cold weather arrives I will change to Trout.

    First attempt at grafting loph.

A well overdue update on my grafted lophs. Have been so busy the last 12 months with uni. and moving houses etc. Unfortunately the dog got hold of the root-tip graft I did; she also managed to damage the other two but I saved them just in time. From memory I did these grafts in April last year, should I be seeing more growth than this? I have read that it is possible to get a flowering specimen within twelve months. Anything I should try doing? repotting? The rootstock is pachanoi.

    Mimosa hostilis?

It popped up where it wasn't suppose to (I tend to throw used seedling mix into the garden) and I planted it up. I am not sure exactly what it is. Cheers.

Still in trouble with my L. williamsii

If they haven't been acclimatized to full sun yet I would give them a couple hours a day in sun for a while until they get used to it. I have both my grafted lophs and ungrafted in full sun (temps upwards of 37c), watered once a month and they love it. I would stop being fussy, put them in a non humid area with some decent light and temperature and forget about them! The more they are moved around the more they will have to get used to the new surroundings. I learned from my mistake of fussing. You could also try grafting if you feel brave ;)

Still in trouble with my L. williamsii

I found the same indentation from mine during winter. They will go soft during their dormncy phase. Mine also developed corky scab from getting too wet. I would take them out of the greenhouse and either put them under a 6500K fluorescent inside or in a warm dry place in the sun.

What did you do in your sacred garden today?

Repotted all my cacti and Khat because they were all rootbound. Cut off pups. Moved Caapi outside now the weather is warmer.

    Bugs destroying Brugmansia/Datura

I want to know the trick to growing Brugmansia/Datura? I have raised these from seed donated by kind people on the forum hydroponically into plants of around 12'' but as soon as they have been planted outside they are destroyed by insects. I have tried greenhouses and snail/slug repelant but I have lost around seven healthy plants. I did a search for this but couldn't find anything on the forum. Please help, I really want to grow these to maturity.
