  1. How come sometimes you can just shove pereskiopsis in the ground and they root and other times they decided to be stubborn and not root fast enough to keep their leaves from shriveling so you have to toss them in water.

Perhaps you are shoving the very tip where it is full of new growth and other lovely hormones that help it root fast.

Well that was my experience anyway

  2. Usually if i do not connect the vascular rings of seedlings they shrivel and die while still attached to the scion.
These ones haven't shriveled and died. They are still rock hard. And they have been in my greenhouse where it is hot and would certainly dehydrate it if the graft weren't successful.
So i guess now i just wait for it.

But it is possible so you should experiment as well if you curios.

  3. Hi gr33ntea Austrocylindropunita are declared weeds of national significance, including a. subulata. In SA it is illegal to sell them, not sure about VIC.

There is something about them that is intriguing I agree. However a few years ago I took all mine to the dump (along with most opuntias I had planted) as they were threatening to be a real mess in my garden within a decade, i.e. becoming impossible to remove massive space invading nasty thickets. They had already become large shrubs within 3 years from single segment cuttings.

I guess you could confine one in a pot.

Not trying to be humbug, just FYI.

Any cactus i have that is slightly like a weed i keep in a pot. When i dispose of it i place it in black bag in the sun to be heated up and died.

    Thanks for the info.

  4. I am looking for an established plant of this. Something that can produce offsets later on.
I really like this plant i wish it came in a spineless variety.

Thanks for your time. I uploaded some pictures below. I am looking for the normal form not the monstrose form where it has like an offset sticking out from every areole

I live in Victoria, Melbourne in Northern Suburbs region in case you wondering.

  5. neat....I wonder if it would work the other way around...I'm having differculty growing some species of pereskia from seed...problem is the seedlings have large leafs and tiny weak stems.

I grew mine from a cutting, sound like a bad evolutionary for pereskia lol, have you tried cutting the leaves?

I got my one under a grow light.

  6. Hello i remember asking and was told that Pereskia grafts are either not possible or there is no advantage to it.
To test the theory I did some grafts a few days ago and to my surprise they did not shrivel and die.

Pereskia is more ancient than pereskiopsis, it grows and looks like a tree and does not resemble a succulent or cactus at all

I can't think of any advantages woody pereskia has over succulent pereskiopsis for grafting but I am curious of the growth rate. (Most likely will be slower than pereskiopsis.

The pereskia here is Pereskia Aculeata Godseffiana and the scion is some trichocereus seedling

  7. why dont you start creating symbiotic relationships with your cacti instead of whacking them up & forcing them to unnatural growth parameters.

try doing nothing for awhile, 'cept talking to them & giving them positive vibes

and ask yourself this question....if you had no internet, would you be clever enough to find out what works for you?

I removed the solid balls of fertilizers, i removed the plastic bag, that is as much as i can do, i think the biggest problem was the plastic bag humidity.

I guess it is trial and error at this point, i just wanted to be sure cause it will be a while until i got more scions to graft. Will post results tomorrow

  8. I will take your advice, my next graft on juicy stock will just be super glue and no pressure, plastic bag, sticky tape

Probably kept it humid for too long. Plus some germ within the bag or the collection. Bacteria and Molds are everywhere and Cacti deal with them pretty well most of the time. But if you cut them and if the conditions are good for Infections, chances are you get them on a couple of plants at once. Would decrease the Time you keep em under a bag or completely get rid of that part. Like it was already said...you usually don´t need humidity for most Grafts. Just pressure.

Should i sprinkle some sulphur dust on it to make sure the mold/fungus wont destroy it?

  9. I made some grafts on very fresh tips, i sterilized and everything and when i placed the graft on it i taped it down but not too tightly

I then put a plastic bag over it, sealed it up a little and placed in my shed in the shade.

For some reason they have caved in, the scion is perfectly ok, i even regrafted them. But why did my grafting stock (Trichocereus Pachonoi) do this?

Strangely i had opuntia grafts in the same conditions and they did not do the same. They were in the shed for 2 days.

  10. personally, i think its totally disingenuous to refer to super pedro as scopulicola, clearly an effort to recognize it as such when clearly (imho) it isnt.

just another made up clone name, more than likely a hybrid

not knocking trichocereus net, but what are its qualifications on plant (trichocereus) naming?

I thought it was a hybrid of Trichocereus Pachanoi PC I was surprised when i saw Trichocereus Scopulicola in the name for Super Pedro

  11. Hello i was just wondering what is super about the Super Pedro (Trichocereus Scopulicola)

Is it super because it grows fast? I am just very curious how it got the name Super,

Sorry for this noob question i actually searched on Shaman i couldnt find the information.

Also the website www.trichocereus.net helped me a lot. Thanks Evil Genius.

    Pictures of Super Pedro http://trichocereus.net/super-pedro-trichocereus-scopulicola/

Edit: i am growing the seedlings as well. I just made a graft of it on pereskiopsis.

Edited by watertrade, no discussion regarding potency please.

  12. personally i think your best bet is to perform some areole grafts, grafting the areoles with green/variegation on them

the yellow variegation wont support photosynthesis, so its going to be rather difficult to grow roots

cut off & graft a few of the green/variegated areoles and try rooting out the remaining chunk

If i were to apply BAP to an yellow areole, would i only get a yellow pup with no green at all?
