QLD Fungi Conference

Recommended Posts

For any of you queenslanders interested in fungi...this may be of some interest.

My GF sent me this today, thought I'd just pass it on!!

Dear all,

Fungi enthusiasts and experts plan to 'lift the gills' on the intriguing but neglected world of macrofungi:

FUNGI CONFERENCE

Saturday, 5 November 2005

Undumbi Room/Parliament House

Parliamentary Annexe, Cnr George/Alice Streets, Brisbane

The conference is organised by the Cubberla-Witton Catchments Network (CWCN). According to participating mycologists an event on higher fungi of this quality and scope is a first for Queensland. Its importance cannot be stressed enough, especially as a repeat is not likely to happen soon.

The conference will give an exceptional opportunity to learn about the important contribution of fungi to biodiversity and their essential role in bushland ecology. Few of us know that our gum trees and other plants cannot survive without the beneficial fungal partnerships via their roots; that fungi are a critical(!) food source for many small mammals, invertebrates and reptiles; that life on earth would come to a standstill within 60 to 80 years without fungi; that Australia has many more macrofungi than plants, that of the estimated 20,000 to 25,000 species barely a quarter has been described, that....

The speakers are specialists in their field, their professional recognition extends internationally. They come from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and will highlight topics of interest to researchers, educators, bush regenerators, and naturalists.

The $50 fee (Early Bird $45 extended until 15 Oct) includes morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch, and is quite without comparison considering the quality of the event. Booking is essential. And don't forget the BBQ reception after the conference.

More information including a selection of abstracts can be obtained from http://www.cubberlawitton.org/conference ( please click on this link). Please ring Jutta Godwin (3378 1929 or 0407 583 441) or Lois Eden (0407 769 569) or email at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> if you have any questions re conference.

Parking is limited at the venue, but there is a carpark close-by at Cnr Margaret/Albert Streets (entry Margaret Street) for $7.00 all day including evening. Otherwise, use the Citycat to GardensPoint or walk from Roma Street Train Station or the Bus Terminal in Queen Street Mall.

Don't miss this unique opportunity. Register for the conference.

Yeah my uni lecturer was encouraging people to go and attend. Only problem is that it is on during the exam period. I got one of the handouts about it.
