narayan Posted August 28, 2004 Has anyone successfully germinated ariocarpus from seed? I've tried twice and have had no luck. Both times i had trichocereus and lopophoria germinate in the same conditions. any hints?

mulch Posted September 2, 2004 hey there narayan.. i've tried first time this year..fissuratus and retusus.. really poor germination rate too. less than 1 in 10. ie 4 from 50. i just used course sand w crushed perlite in punnets on heat mat(28degC) with clingwrap over the top till sprouted then removed. The ones that germinated did so within a week and really took off , much faster than anything else (trichs/lophs/whathaveyou.) they're really fat little fellas.. but they'll be grafted soon anyway.(dont want to lose them.) infinite_monkey Posted September 2, 2004 tried about this time last year, had about 80% success had a few other species in the same environment and had almost 100% with most others. i used propagation sand in a yates propagation dome, just coverd seeds with a THIN layer of sand (just to cover) and kept moisture and light levels about right for a couple of weeks, they started to come up in about 2-3 depending on species. this method seems to work for me usually have pretty good strike rate, but doesnt for a friend of mine so a little trial and error
narayan Posted September 3, 2004 thanks for the advice guys, when I get some more seeds i think i'll try covering the seeds in a thin layer of soil and see how that goes.
