Can an older stock be used to graft onto?

I have a oldish (woody core formed) T. pachanoi stock that I want to graft a 2-3 year old button or a smallish side shoot onto.

Will this be a bad choice as the woody centre is hard to cut through cleanly? Or are there techniques around this that could work?

Anyone tried it?

In my opinion it would be better to wait for it to produce a pup and graft it onto that
