grafting onto opuntia

Recommended Posts

Guest Mesqualero

It would depend on what species of cactus you wanted to graft, I don't think it would be efficient or even possible to graft say a button cactus or a column cactus onto an opuntia. I think Shlumbergera (spelling?) are grafted onto opunita though.

why not a loph?

if you waited for a pup to appear on the opuntia then sliced it off and grafted onto that point.

just a thought,might give it a go.

ill let you know.

Love to see that.

Ive got a hundred or so myrtillocactus seed waiting for me to grow them out as eventual rootstocks for lophs and aslo for their blueberry like fruit.

Whats the best systemic fungicide for raising cacti from seed relaiably?

and whats everyones favourite seed raising mix?

In a book i have called 'a guide to cacti of the world' by Brian.m.Lamb it has an illustrated example of grafting onto opuntia with a small globular cactus using the usual flat graft method, it doesnt suggest to graft onto a joint from a pup. Im not sure if the vascular ring on the opuntia would be a ring or an oval shape though. I think the opuntia is better for grafting thin stemmed cacti using the v graft method.
