0 katu Posted November 15, 2015 I think it's a Brachychiton sp's, commonly known as a kurrajong.
0 katu Posted November 15, 2015 How big are the flowers? What do the leaves look like? Where did you spot it exactly? There's 30 or so species of these trees. Beautiful natives. Flame trees are one of the more commonly known species. I'm pretty sure i'm right with the genus, maybe someone can chime in with a species name for you. Hope this helps.. 0 miss-meander88 Posted November 15, 2015 Hey katu thanks for the reply The flowers are about 5-6cm and a lovely deep pinkish red colour... Im in north brisbane, the tree seems to be deciduous? (Excuse my ignorance if i have used the wrong terminology)... I never notice it most of the year but once a year these thick velveteen blossoms always catch my fancy... It seems to flower while it drops it leaves?? The leaves it does have look a lot like an oak/maple leaf style leaf? (Thinkin "oh ca-na-da!!") Heres a few pics... I know theyre probably boring as fuck but i think they're pretty and unique with their thick furry velveteen rabbit style petals...mmmmm fuzzy ;) Excuse the half painted gardening gremlin fingernails... tis late and im half pissed lol Whatever it is its absolutely beautiful... thanks katu for the help ... If its native, how gorgeous and fluffy and beautoful is that ? Fuck yeah australia
0 miss-meander88 Posted November 15, 2015 I googled flame tree... i dont think so :/ maybe i googled the wrong thing...these look more tlike those thick velvet star flowers that stink like flesh on cacti and carniviorous species... Maybe i googled wrong flame tree... But they are thick, unbruisable fuzzy star motherfuckers .. weird as Gorgeous though... (Oops excuse the language - i am supposed to be a miss.. and one of the few ladies on here so i apologise for my language...now and for the next 500 posts )
0 miss-meander88 Posted November 15, 2015 Flame tree? :/
0 katu Posted November 15, 2015 I think it's a Brachychiton discolor from your pics. Lobed leaves like oaks and maples like you stated. And yes they are deciduous. The pic in your above post is not the flame tree we have here. Google the latin Brachychiton acerifolium for the native flame tree.
0 katu Posted November 15, 2015 (edited) I think the red flower in your above post belongs to a Delonix regia commonly known as a poinciana. Also known as a flame tree . Common names can be confusing...Best stick with the latin . Edited November 15, 2015 by katu

0 miss-meander88 Posted November 15, 2015 Oh dear katu, all the flowers i find googling that latin name come up as the same leaves but the flowers of the species you gave the latin name of only give me google results of images of those same red flame coloured clusters of flowers... 0 Anodyne Posted November 15, 2015 Oh dear katu, all the flowers i find googling that latin name come up as the same leaves but the flowers of the species you gave the latin name of only give me google results of images of those same red flame coloured clusters of flowers... I am confused :/... Here, try this one: Brachychiton discolor
0 Anodyne Posted November 15, 2015 (edited) The kurrajongs around Sydney (they've planted some as street trees) get covered with harlequin beetles at certain times of year - they gather together for enormous colourful bug orgies - males, females & juveniles are all different colours so it's pretty spectacular. So if you have some trees nearby, that's something else to watch out for, lol Edited November 15, 2015 by Anodyne
0 katu Posted November 15, 2015 LOL. Lets summarize. Your original ID request with the purple flowers is Brachycitum discolor which is closely related to B.acerifolium. The red flower you posted is a D.regia
0 Anodyne Posted November 15, 2015 More harlequin beetle porn...

0 miss-meander88 Posted November 15, 2015 Beautiful flower and tree.. shame theres so many non natives competing.... Can someone here give me a "fuck yeah" as for slaughtering the Chinese Elms in my back yard? If not, im all for being given a reason as not to continue my war path against them.... Maybe not the right forum to ask but yeah...
0 flora Posted November 15, 2015 I reckon if it's your backyard, you can do what you want there. But are you sure they're Chinese elms? depending how big they are (or rather how small) perhaps you could uproot them and score some gnarly bonsai stock?
