migraineur Posted April 22, 2012 Here are some decent fluro lights that you could get cheaply from Ebay. I've seen the same kind of kits in shops for a lot more. I use a 130 watt fluro for my cactus seedlings. I also use them to help some of my tropical plants when I bring them inside during the colder months. Fluro lights use bugger all energy too compared to a high pressure sodium or metal halide light. You can calculate the cost quite easily too but you'll have to look up how much your electricity supplier charges. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUNBRITE-FLUORO-SMALL-WHITE-SHADE-KIT-14000K-130W-CFL-/400133646685?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item5d29d2e95d#ht_1442wt_1165 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUNBRITE-FLUORO-LARGE-WHITE-SHADE-KIT-14000k-250W-CFL-/120591465451?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item1c13cfbbeb#ht_1451wt_1165 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/GROLITE-FLUORO-SMALL-WHITE-SHADE-KIT-6400K-130W-CFL-/400292160150?pt=AU_Seed_Starting_Hydroponics&hash=item5d3345a296#ht_1355wt_1165
gneumatics Posted April 25, 2012 Cheers mate Love having more links! I have actually found the following lights suit my purposes better due to the more even lighting (for shade loving psychotria) and atm %30 off for anybody interested... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/T5-FLUORO-PROPAGATION-LIGHT-4-X-LAMP-55W-HYDROPONICS-/220871863648?pt=AU_Home_Outdoor_Lighting&hash=item336cfd2d60
migraineur Posted April 26, 2012 55 watts is nothing. I can't see a pic. Are there 4 * 55 watt lights all in a row or something? They might not like direct sunlight but they still love light which is why a fluro can be good. You can put the plant close to the light without worrying about burning them. The use of reflective material such as the shades/bat wings or a tent made from reflective mylar will also help. Also, remember the inverse square law. Every time you double the distance your plant is away from the light source the plant will receive 1/4 as much light. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverse_square_law I'd also recommend saving that Ebay seller. The stuff that seller has is CHEAP. I think it's the same seller that had the cheapest heating mats I ever saw.
theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted May 17, 2012 i just recieved some rooted leaf cuttings and this has me thinking.... could you just use a perlite/vermiculite mix? Ive used this many times for various plants with success, both drainage and water retention... also could the use of a hps lamp be good? it would help raise temps within your grow space, helping with the humidity also i think... also some other advice, I'd stay away from alot of the ebay powersellers of hydroponic goods... i just had a mate of mine get raided after buying off one based in sydney, of coarse he is legit and nothing illegal was happening, the cops apparently left just as abrupt as they entered... anyways good luck with your future endevours! d00d
