kadakuda Posted January 10, 2012 This is mostly about B. caapi because many other vines i grow dont have issues being trained. But caapi i cannot get to grow sideways, even at 45 angles....all they to is UP, seems they are heavily gravity sensitive i guess because the *only* way i have managed so far is setting up temp bamboo poles, let them grow then manually wind them around horizontal string and setup the bamboo pole again, what a stubborn vine!!! Is there a faster way to do this? i have some rebar frame and rope strung up in an area to grow this. its about 6' wide by 6' tall by 80' long. Have 2 plants planted every 20 feet, just need them to grow into each other along the bottom then they can do up all they want...
Zaka Posted January 10, 2012 Irie Kada, I've managed to get them to run along my fence. Constant trimming, tucking & braiding/platting as it grows. I trimmed 20kgs off this fenceline in November. It's now grown back to this size again in Jan!! Respect, Z
kadakuda Posted January 10, 2012 looking good man, mine dont do that though, they grow up just fine, but not out. when i really get into training them they show me who's boss and just grow as a shrub for half a year lol.
Zaka Posted January 10, 2012 Irie, Yeah it';s a constant battle! Many pieces break when pulled in to order. Don't worry if they snap but are still attached, they mostly recover. Cutting right back every 3 mths or so just to keep a handle on it. These are trained on a barbed-wire fence. Respect, Z

2Deep2Handle Posted January 11, 2012 lol not exactly horizontal growth, but i trained mine up 2 meters of 2 meter wide lattice back and forth, and once it made it to the top, i just let it spill back out over my shade cloth, and it now only creeps horizontally across this, as it tries togrow upwards, has nothing to grow it vertically, and so falls back onto the shade, grows as a horizontal, and sends more out in an attempt to get ''higher', and the process starts again. Any one know if 'thin' stem still contains the harmas? I will be re-inforcing this shade cloth in the near fututre, as it is bowing under the load from the Agreiya, as well as the sprawling caapi now.
kadakuda Posted January 11, 2012 ya they grow super fast, as do mine. But they don't grow out very much, they really like going UP and slightly out. Zaka how did you get yours to grow so much outwards?
Mt.B Posted January 11, 2012 time to start making a horizontal cultivar Not knowing anything about doing this, would you cross it with some vine that had these properties? Would this potentially change the chemical composition also? I read that B. caapi rarely flowers/seeds, or is that just here in Australia?

Irie Kada, The secret is vicious hacking back!!! Bending & twisting!!!Total abuse! These are my first Caapi grown from seeds.........3yrs to flower, but I'm sure I could have done it in two! Guess it's all about climate, mate! Respect, Z
