FOUND MY FIRST G. PURPURATUS TODAY (WEST OZ)

hey all just thought i'd share a couple pics

went on a short walk today and within ten minutes found my first gymnopolis purpuratus specimens

so i snapped a couple quick shots

and grabbed a couple of them and a chunk of wood they were growing from

the dead tree's they were growing from was covered in small blue pins and mycelium

so here you go check em out

was pretty happy with this find

it was funny i was walking along a walk trail looking at all the logs on the side thinkin to myself i should go off the track and check some of these logs out and bam first and only log i checked out there they were right there just a few metres from the track

wich makes me think i either got very lucky or they are very abundant in the area

so get out there perth people cos they arent hard to find at all

Nice find and thanks for the report Myco.

In my own experience I've often found gyms in quite open spaces or the bushland bordering same and also to the side of trails more frequently than deeply into dense forrest. I think that this is because as gym spores blow about the atmosphere they find these places much easier to reach than penetrating deeply into dense thicket.

Can you identify what type of wood these gym purps were growing on?

For Australians I think at this stage it would be good to start tabulating what woods gym purps tends to favor. Thanks.

they were found growing from fallen down pieces of banksia

the myc has just taken over the thick bark on the logs its all just falling off

and completely covered in blue myc an pins

its a pretty amazing sight actually i've never seen anything like it :)

no you didnt get lucky, they ARE everywhere :wink: team gym hunt anyone? I think its time we really got stuck into understanding/ studying these gyms!
