Zaka Posted April 14, 2011 Irie, Came across this post, from sometime back & wondered what your (t st tantra) interest in the thornless hostilis is??? i read they drop a leaf every now and then.....making their own mulch! were any of your plants thornless? thanx t s t . I have noticed, after being scratched up by many, that I do indeed have one that is Thornless... I can personally see the appeal! Ouch!!! Respect, Z
kadakuda Posted April 14, 2011 Is it actually hostilis? I hate those things, and pruning is an especially dreadful time lol. But old stems seem to loose their thorns as they grow thick.
Zaka Posted April 14, 2011 Irie Kada, Yeah defiantly hostilis..... No thorns at all! Not even on the new growth branches.... I noticed it whilst knocking off the thorns with the back of a machete.... I see it's flowering as well! Wouldn't it be nice to isolate a thornless strain??? Respect, Z
kadakuda Posted April 14, 2011 very cool! got any pictures? a smooth stemmed hostilis is something i would really LOVE to see!

planthelper Posted April 15, 2011 wonderfull pic's there zaka, thx for the upload! i totaly like how you captured the different stages of flower and seed pod development, because i have never seen flowers or pods on mine. i have spotted unopend flowers on mine, but nothing else. so i wonder at what time people in oz pick there seeds. how long does it take from the open flower to the ready seeds? do the pods stay on the tree for a while or do they open up fast or fall down? has anybody probagated this plant via cutting? so there is a source of seeds producing thornless? Zaka Posted April 16, 2011 Irie, Ya gonna be pissed when I tell ya they are only two & half years old from seed!!! They started flowering in Nov & are still going strong... I've been collecting seed by climbing on the house roof that they hang over.... That was a smart move.... Seems to be some predation from birds... I pick them as they dry or nearly so.... The trees, in flower, are covered with blooms & the bees in the morning are all over them! I'll have to isolate the seeds from "Toothless" for further investigation!! I'll also try a cutting (hack & stick) of "Toothless" for fun!! Respect, Z
