Question

I noticed this damage being done in my area and it led me to presume that these are obtusifolia or some other targetted acacia. I've pre-emptively planted some more in the area (on the presumption that it is obtusifolia) but could I get an identification? This damage has to be by humans. As well as the damage photographs are some of similar-looking plants in the area and you can also see some seedlings I'm re-generating with. Thanks, gang! :)

it just looks like serious borer damage on longifolia

edit: and probably birds/possums tearing open the bark to eat the grubs.. is very common

I think I found a longifolia the other day. Was walking home to a friend's place, at maybe 9pm. Quite dark. And we walked a shortcut that I've never walked before. Somehow, in the dark (quite dark), I managed to notice a possible Acacia as I was just walking past it. I grabbed a few leaves, and checked them once we had got back. Acacia for sure, and more than likely a Longifolia. I was quite pleased with that find. :)

Hmmm there're bark strips like that on a few of them and the strips are only taken facing the path, not on the other sides. Just seems suspicious to me but maybe possums and birds were using the same path.

I suppose you're right though. If it is longifolia there wouldn't be much reason for a human to be knocking them off unless they thought they were obtusifolia or some other species with features they desire.

Acacia for sure, and more than likely a Longifolia. I was quite pleased with that find. :)

Are you interested in longifolia? All of the ones I came across had already dropped their seeds or had them eaten otherwise I'd offer some.

I'm not so interested in it. But I do like to ID as many plants as possible. Awesome feeling knowing what many of the plants you see are (not that I know more than a few). :)

I'm also working on sprouting my Acacia seeds in the coming weeks. :D

I'm just worried about the amount of attention they'll need. I wish I had a remote controlled plant robot which I could pilot to water and feed my plants when I'm away from home. One day...

yeah, you just see the same thing on A. longifolia & other short lived acacia spp. all the time, they are really prone to borers & possums etc love them.. in the first pic you can clearly see the borer 'burrows' in the heartwood & notice how everywhere that the bark is stripped, it's been stripped all the way down to the heartwood & the borer holes... not just the bark... it's just a really common thing to see in longifolia :)

I used to set Forte (yellow thing) to do all my chores before going into town but at a certain point the end result loses the satisfaction because there's no challenge. At want point do we get to thinking "I wish I could be on my death bed now to save the struggles of living."? Food for thought. :P

Thanks! I was jumping to conclusions condemning humans as an oportunistic, consumptive, destructive and resource-ignorant species. :BANGHEAD2: I suppose relatively few are into alkaloid tree-butchery.
