A team of Swedish forensic physicians have concluded that nine young people have died over the past year after having taken the legal drug Krypton.

Krypton is sold widely over the internet and is marketed as a safe drug but the risk of overdosing is high, the physicians have observed.

"Krypton reminds me of other opiates such as morphine. It is not some sort of party drug," said Björn Bäckström, who works at the National Board of Forensic Medicine in Umeå, to the local Västerbottens Kuriren daily.

Bäckström, together with colleagues Gisela Classon, Peter Löwenheim and Gunilla Thelander, have penned an article published in the medical journal Läkartidningen warning of the risks of Krypton.

The National Board of Forensic Medicine receives intakes after deaths from across Sweden and one case involving Krypton led the physicians to consider the effects of the drug and found several more cases.

The Krypton-related deaths are spread across Sweden and involve both heavy addicts and occasional users, while they all concern people born in the 1970s and 1980s, the newspaper reported.

Krypton is derived from the south-east Asian plant kratom which has been traditionally used for potency and to improve mood. Aside from the leaves and extracts from kratom, Krypton has also been found to contain caffeine and the synthetic opioid O-Desmethyltramadol.

O-Desmethyltramadol is a breakdown of the product tramadol, which is prescribed in moderation to alleviate severe pain and when taken as Krypton is turned into tramadol in the liver and becomes more potent.

It is due to this high potency contained in the O-Desmethyltramadol that the risk of overdosing is considered high, leading to respiratory paralysis.

The Swedish physicians expect the extract and opiate to turn up in other forms if they are not classified as narcotics.

"That is one of the purposes of the article - to bring attention to this drug so that it should be narcotics classified," Björn Bäckström told the newspaper.

This is fucking unacceptable for ethno products. Spice and that, yeah I can let slide. Even all those plant food tablets and "legal" party pills with their unlisted illegal ingredients I don't mind too much as for the most part, they are safe. And without deception would never be available in the first place. But releasing sumthing "presumably highly addictive" and potent with small room for error, such as a product like this is exactly wats gona get every legal and grey area ethno banned.

Agreed! Putting something so fuckin stupid such as O-Desmethyltramadol into a product is absolutely disgusting! Tramadol itself is a horrific drug that no doctor should prescribe as friends of mine that have broken their arms, cut off fingers at work etc. all get prescribed tramadol or some other similar opioid for upto 8 weeks.. only to find themselves in a hell of a nightmare once stopping the stuff.

It will most definitely shine more of a negative light upon all medicinal/entho plants if shit like this keeps being brought into the market. :ana:

Tramadol was the catalyst for my codeine addiction; more than the codeine itself, funnily enough. I knew Kratom contained opioid-like actives, but had no idea it would be like tramadol. Interesting! I never had a problem stopping the tramadol after I developed twitching on high-ish doses. Knew I wasn't being smart with it.

Would those who've had Kratom when/where it was/is legal, as well as tramadol, compare the two? Or just hazard a vivid guess?

i can't compare kratom to tramadol, as i never used it, but kratom can be a bit edgy, like codein feels for me.

fresh material give's more of the edgyness, older material maybe less, if i remeber correctly.

I always got stimulant effects rather than narcotic type effects from Kratom but I guess that’s because I never took doses high enough.

It was a great loss to Australians when Kratom was scheduled.

Same andy.

Even with high doses of supposedly excellent quality material i have never got anything close to an opi8 like effect. With a high dose i got massive stimulation, i could not sit still at all, was pacing and bouncing off the walls, not a pleasant experience at all considering i was after the opi8 effect which i was told should come about with a high dose. The only way i could get rid of the feeling was to have some REAL opi8s which was disappointing as the reason i was having it was to see if it could be used in place of as to reduce the WDs. I have never had it again and dont wish to
