bℓσωηG Posted August 28, 2010 (edited) My 250 watt metal halide bulb is nearing the 9 month of use mark... the guy in the shop said i should replace the bulb after this time regardless of whether it is still working or not.. because he says they lose their intensity? spectrum? Is this just a fib to sell more bulbs? or is it true? a gif for your answer Edited August 28, 2010 by blowng

Legba Posted August 29, 2010 Ive heard some HID's lose half their intensity in a month of hard use, not from a salesman, from a dude with a light meter, so Id say 9 mths is probably more than reasonable to believe.

mescalito Posted August 30, 2010 A knowledgeable guy at a shop in Canberra said most change every 3 to 4 "seasons" as they, like flouro's lose intensity of certain colours in the spectrum over time. It'll still work well, but a new one will increase yield and growth rate.
rosetta stoned Posted August 31, 2010 metal halide last longer then hps id keep it longer personally i dont think you will notice any difference 250w bulbs are expensive if your just growing vegetables the loss of yield due to less light intensity will not come close to the price of a new bulb
