Himalayan seed

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you know of a tree from the himalayas or nepal which apparently has the following characteristics:

-looks like a jacaranda, especially the leaves,

-has firey red flowers,

-is apparently of a mythic(?) status,

-has small seeds about 2cm long by 1/2 cm wide and 1/4 cm deep in a rounded oblong shape which are REALLY fucking hard and look a bit like a lightcoloured dappled wood on the outside; only harder.

A friend of mine sent us some from nepal and one of my friends in sydney is trying to germinate them. Of course, being an architect, our friend sent no other important info. :-(

Any ideas, both on the plant, and germination? We attacked one of the seeds with some pliers, and bent them, leaving a small dint in the seed.

?

Other possibilities...

Calpa tree

from http://www.wisdomofindia.org/Uttaramegha.htm

cant find botanical identity

or ashoka tree

Botanical Name: Saraca Indica or Jonesia Ashok. http://www.essences.com/vibration/sept98/ashoka.html

but this site identifies it as a different species, "Polyalthea longifolia Benth & Hook. f. var. pandurata" of a Anonanceae Family, a native plant of India and Sri Lanka. http://www.au.ac.th/aboutus/general.html

which does not fit the description

so who knows?

Given that most of the 'Sacred' herbs of india have so far turned out to be psychoactive - whenever i hear of a new one my interest definitely sparks

Cannabis sativa

Datura metel syn D alba

Ficus religiosa

Ocimum sanctum

Nelumbo nucifera

more to come i bet
