Guest Ramon Posted September 7, 2000 Does anybody know of a way of making Kava more palatable?
Torsten Posted September 8, 2000 We extract ours into a resin. This is then easily mixed in with all sorts of drinks or food. Before making the resin we used to mix it into tropical type drinks - pineapple, coconut etc- which mask the taste nicely and also help with emulsification if you do it in a blender. A small shot of malibu or white rum really adds kick to the kava, as they potentiate each other drastically. Daniel also used to like mixing it in with milo, but even though I liked it the first few times, it ended up going down worse than the powder itself after a while. Guest Ramon Posted September 8, 2000 Thanks for the info Torsten. Can you elaborate on reducing it to resin.
Torsten Posted September 9, 2000 This stuff ins't too heat sensitive, so ethanol (70% or more) is a suitable solvent. Just extract with liberal quantities of solvent and then evaporate the solvent by placing in a shallow pan in a warm spot. Once reduced to about 5% of the weight of the kava powder, it is ready. if you're not too fussy about solvent residues you can also use acetone. This is a distilled product and not all that toxic anyway, so it's use is fairly safe, as long as it is removed thoroughly.
