immanuel Posted April 1, 2007 (edited) Hey all. I found a large growth of this reed outside my house, and thoght it looked to be Arundo donax. Can I get others opinions, do you agree with my Identification? Edited April 1, 2007 by mardybum
0 tonic Posted April 1, 2007 That is Common Reed Phragmites australis, a protected Australian species, I would leave it well alone. You can actually get fined for digging this native reed out
0 immanuel Posted April 1, 2007 (edited) I won't be digging it out either way. The alkaloids are mostly gramine with a small amount of DMT, so i've read. Thanks for the ID though. Edited April 1, 2007 by mardybum
0 tonic Posted April 2, 2007 Hey no worries mardybum. Apart from being a protected plant IMHO it isn't really worth digging out the large quantities of rhizome needed to do any sort of research with this genus. Lovely plant though. One of my favourite native reeds. Good to sit near the plant and meditate [in any way you choose to meditate ] and just listen to the papery leaves rustling in the breeze, quite calming.
