shruman Posted January 27, 2007 Still a niiice collection, do u plant straight in blue metal or use it as a top mulch type layer. ur collection will not be quite as modest next year why are ur pedro cuts so long i was led to believe an inch of pedro would root on its side? mu! Posted January 27, 2007 i was led to believe an inch of pedro would root on its side? That may be very well true, but bigger is better
Bongchitis Posted January 27, 2007 yep, what without said. There seems to be a window where most people here operate with there cuts and I have just followed their lead with great results. Anywhere between 15cm and 40cm seems popular. Most of mine are 20cm.
ENtiTY Posted January 28, 2007 Nice collection indeed ! Side cuts eh. Never seen that before. Is there any particular reason for doing side cuts? Whats the growth pattern like from a side cutting? Very interesting !!
Kenny Blister Posted January 28, 2007 Nice Bongchitis. I know we got our super pedro, kimura's and the psycho0 at about the same time, but I've potted mine vertically. Might be nice to compare pupping. So far only my kimura's have pups and were actually the first to chuck out roots.
Bongchitis Posted January 29, 2007 Side planting is supossed to generate a larger surface area for root development and thus greater pupping, not sure if it works but all of my cuts have 2 pups growing simultaneously, growth pattern the same as for any other pup I believe....funnily (or not) on the upper most arioles as if it were planted vertically!....all of them! The super pedro threw roots first and is plump to the point of rediculous but is only just starting to pup from 2 arioles. Psycho tip cut is getting secondary spines but no real growth or plumping. Kimuras are both throwing 2 pups one a little more plump and advanced than the other, same sized pups as super. Eileen tip is growing with no plumping, almost 4 inches with little to no roots in 2 months. Eileen centre cut side plantings all pupped without roots and are really dehydrated but still growing strong and look great, there must be roots there somewhere, growing faster than any other cacti I have. Kenny Blister Posted January 29, 2007 I wait in earnest for my super to pup. I'll post some pics of my kimura's pups tomorrow.
Kenny Blister Posted January 30, 2007 (edited) A day late... Thanks for letting me mooch off your thread bongchitis Edited January 30, 2007 by Kenny Blister
Bongchitis Posted January 30, 2007 Looking good kenny! Mine are not as advanced pup wise, but have 2 per cut just popping out.....just like yours, the fatter cut is more advanced. Camera availability is sparce for me and thus the glut of pics in various threads from me recently, all about opportunity. But I will take updated pics of the logs soon as the pics above were just after potting up. Do you (or anyone else) expect to see a colour change to a deeper green or is this a variant characteristic? In the top pic, back right corner, I have a fat scop cut from a mates plant and in the other rear corner is a std aussie scop which is dark green. I expected a colour change once I planted the fat scop as they are now both being grown with the same sun, water and fert regime....the fat scop is still that yellow green as is the Kimura! Perhaps I need to wait longer! Cheers................Bongchitis
Kenny Blister Posted January 31, 2007 Do you (or anyone else) expect to see a colour change to a deeper green or is this a variant characteristic? Can't help you there (me=cactus noob), but my pups are a much darker green than the photo shows. You seen the pics of kimura here?
Bongchitis Posted January 31, 2007 Aahhhhhh I see. Our cuts are obviously from older arms, some of the new growth looks beautiful and green. Perhaps not enough of a root system on my cuts to deliver enough nutes yet. Cool . Thanks for the pic kenny. I think I had only seen the wide shot of the whole plant where all growth appears yellow/green, though i do look with my elbows at times
