  1. People are routinely told by their doctors to avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking a variety of medications because of potentially dangerous side effects. For instance, the beverage should be avoided when taking certain blood-pressure or cholesterol-lowering drugs, as well as HIV medications, organ-transplant drugs and sedatives.

The reason: Grapefruit juice can cause these drugs to enter the blood stream more efficiently, thereby increasing the dose and effect -- and the potential for undesirable and even dangerous side effects.

??? This may be true, but I think the effect would be negligable compared with the well-documented CYP3A4 inhibition by grapefruit juice. I also doubt whether this could used clinically to any advantage.

  2. Nice one apoth, you are always pushing the boundaries of drug inhibition/synergy :P

    I am unfamiliar with the CYP450s UT-2, UT- 4, or UT-5, however I was under the impression that the main metabolising CYP450 enzymes were 1A2, 2B6, 2C8, 2C19, 2C9, 2D6, 2E1 and 3A4/5

A few papers I have read suggest that that cannabinoids are metabolised by 3A4 and also inhibit this enzyme. Grapefruit juice is a 3A4 inhibitor also, so what we need is for someone to chug ~1L of grapefruit juice and smoke up to see if there if there is any significance in this... bags not it :puke:

Also found this paper, keep in mind fellas the next time you mix prescription and recreational :saufen2: dRugS!?!?

Truth be told, CYP450s have only really started to be looked at and there is a lot of work to be done yet

Myocardial Infarction Following the Combined Recreational Use of Viagra® and Cannabis

    A. L. MCLEOD, M.D., MRCP, C. J. MCKENNA, M.D., MRCP, D. B. NORTHRIDGE, M.D., MRCP

Department of Cardiology, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, U.K.

    Summary

Sildenafil citrate (Viagra®,Pfizer, Inc., New York, N.Y.) is widely prescribed as a treatment for male erectile dysfunction. It is metabolized predominantly by the cytochrome P450 3A4 hepatic microsomal isoenzyme and effects can, therefore, be potentiated by such inhibitors. The vasodilatory effects of Viagra necessitate caution in its use in patients with cardiovascular disease and it is contraindicated in patients receiving nitrates. Previous literature has drawn attention to Viagra use and myocardial infarction. This paper reports the case of a young man who presented with a myocardial infarction after taking Viagra in combination with cannabis, a known inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 3A4 isoenzyme.

  3. I brush my teeth twice in a row with F-toothpaste each morning, total time ~5mins, which during exam period along to every other facet of personal hygiene drops to about twice a week. Had my last check up about 6 months ago and the first thing the dentist says is 'wow, you do a good job of brushing your teeth' Still no fillings though everyone in my family has at least 3.

It will catch up with me someday, it is illogical but the twice in a row brushing seems to compensate for all the days I miss out... however Evil Genius' 10 times per day is about 5 times more than the average OCD patient

It might have something to do with all the milk I drink though, as rev was saying

I think that is half the reason I am still living at home... my milk-lust would drive me broke

  4. As a side topic, does anyone know if there is a concise book that summarises the rights that police have and the rules they must follow. (eg. with regards to personal/property searches)? - not saying that any of them follow said rules. I would love to have it in my pocket to whip out at opportune moments.

An interesting one that my older sister has exploited is that apparently police are not allowed to issue driving infringements without the presence of another officer. She was pulled up by a lone uniformed cop in an unmarked car for speeding, who in subsequent days came to our house to issue the ticket.

My sisters bf had told her of this rule, and she basically declined to take the ticket after which the cop got really pissed off and left.

Even better, she saw him off duty at the local shops about a week later blasted the shit out of him! :ana: (btw she is a hardcore bitch but I love the anti-authoritarian streak in her)

I have noticed this effect too, after a rainy night doing some high-speed cornering and wet weather skiddies in the kingswood I was pulled up by a lone detective in an unmarked car. A young, reckless driving P-plater and all he could do was yell at me. I am not saying that my driving was particularly smart but is does present an interesting situation, but then again... how often do cops travel in ones? (and don't worry, I have grown up and been ticketed several times since then  )

So I ask, do you know of any other 'loopholes' and is there a pocket guide for police conduct?

  5. I remember seeing a news story on some places in the UK that introduced inhalable alcohol, which was reported to be a more euphoric effect without the hangover. After cleaning the benches down with pure ethanol after microbiology labs, I can vouch for the euphoria at least :P

Seriously, alcohol has a lot more 'unpleasant' side-effects than hangovers. Synthehol should be developed to get rid of the violence and the morning after bush-pigs as well

I am still waiting for the moloko bars ala clockwork orange, I've always wanted to see what the milk + synthmesc tasted like

  6. IME, the pin-pulling exercise is pain free, depending on the position some slide out quite easily while others require a bit of grunt and gusto

I had two pins in my hand after an incident with a shopping trolley return rack, a bmx and a large flock of seagulls; it is far too short and stupid to go into detail

  7. I would leave the two tip cuttings as they are

chop the two fatty mid cuts into four equal chunks, callous them out well and plant them sideways about 60% deep in cacti mix cut with perlite to make it very well draining

As we are heading into dormancy (winter), you wouldn't get much growth anyway (I dunno, maybe queensland is different) but by the time spring comes they will take off

I did the above with a 60cm bridgesii cut about this time last year, now I have 8 little ones from the chunks plus the tip (which has also just throw a pup)

  8. SaBReT00tH, you could mail pereskiopsis to WA from within WA  PM me if you want a cutting

I honestly don't know about the quarantine thing but I've never had anything blocked from the east coast in 2 years

  9. Herpes is only infectious all of the time in individuals with recurrent HSV-2 (which is responsible for most recurrent infections). These unfortunate souls will shed viral particles even when no lesions are present.

In all seriousness though - if you put a condom on your willie, transmission rates head towards zero

The girl in a couple that regularly comes into the pharmacy that I work at has recurrent herpes. I did an infectious disease case presentation on them, they have been going out for ~2 years and she is taking suppressive antivirals which reduce the frequency/severity of recurrences. The guy remains negative after regularly testing even though they have regular unprotected sex but abstain when she is having a recurrence.

So it's not the end of the world.

They are trying for a baby though, which is a whole new can of worms they could potentially open

  10. ...and just to scare the fuck outta some people, here are some stats for herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), the virus responsible for 75% of gential herpes (hehe... holden's hotted up cars are named after a venereal disease)

% represent those who are seropositve for HSV-2 IgG i.e. they have had previous exposure

    Sexually active adults 20-40%

    Heterosexual females

    1 lifetime partner 10%

    2-10 lifetime partners 20%

    11-50 lifetime partners 35%

    >50 lifetime partners 70%

although only ~25% of seropositives have symptoms

WATCH YOUR SHIT - herpes is for life fellas

I would have told the junkie to blow a goat and then I'll give her $20

Sometimes I read the personals in the community paper for a larf - I love the ones that go:

    "Cuddly F 42, seeking prof guy 35-45

Must be fun loving, like long walks,

blah blah crap, animal lover and GSOH.

    I have herpes"

haha, you thought you would slip that in right at the end so I wouldn't notice, didn't ya? :D

btw, I have a long term gf and learning infectious diseases has confirmed and cemented the advantages of monogamy in my mind.

edit: you're right Dom, my stats were for HSV

  11. oh and coin, i thought green tea had like, 0% caffeine....i could be wrong though.

Most green teas have high caffeine concentration relative to black teas, shocked me when I first read about it.

Now I like going to those little japanese eateries and drinking out of their big green tea boiler. Watch out when you get down to the bottom though... palpitations anyone?

  12. Shit yeah... quitting a job is a most liberating experience, I love that last few weeks where everyone that works there knows you are going to a better place. Talking to them and seeing that look in their eyes that says 'take me too!' :uzi:

If you don't mind Fenris, could I ask what you did at Pfizer? I'm going into that industry and was curious what the good and bad things about working for a large pharma co.

  13. Heya creach, there is a hydro store in Belmont that sell the pots, expensive though at 50c each.

I forget the name, it is in the same block of shops as super cheap auto near intersection of alexander and abernathy rd.

  14. Any of the males here tried viagra/levitra/cialis?

Care to share your experiences?

Bought some viagra (50mg) back in bali bali and tried it out on my gf after eating a big seafood platter. That first time I barred up rock hard, used it like it was detached from my body and when I finished that was the end of it.

Second time, I was back in Perth and waking up from a night at a hotel with the gf where said member had been well exercised the previous night  . Dropped it and had sex like I hadn't dropped it, and then walked around the city where I proceeded to bar up randomly for 5 mins at a time for the next 4 hours.

    I have one left.

  15. My condolences reshroomED for your loss.

Are you going to have a 'rememberance ceremony' with the remains :innocent_n: or are you looking to bring christmassy cheer and make someone's christmas wishes come true?

'cos I'm keen as for a cutting, I will cover disposal costs so to speak

  16. I have a similar POV to nate, I smoked 3+ times a week from the ages of 17-21. While it didn't really affect my mental performance, I found that it destroyed my motivation levels. Even after stopping at the start of this year, I still struggle to muster up enough motivation to study for exams and complete assignments.

However, the actual process of quitting pot was easy IMO. I did not find cannabis to be physically addictive in any way, rather it was the 'stoner group' mentality and the smoking rituals that needed to be broken. Once these were forgotten (along with some stoners that couldn't understand why someone would want to quit pot) the reasons for pot smoking became irrelevant and I haven't toked since.

Calling cannabis a 'near perfect' drug is an oxymoron.

  17. Neuropathic pain is tricky to prescribe for effective symptom control. TCAs are first line therapy for things like neuralgia, but it is difficult to define the doses required and you get all the shitty side effects that go along with them. But listen to mescalito and go back to the doctor if you want to stop taking them.

Anticonvulsants (carbamazepine, sodium valproate and gabapentin) are also used for neuropathic pain, mention this to the doc and see how it grabs him. Low doses are used but again there are side effects, not serotonergic like the TCAs and less life-affecting IMO.

    Sorry, I don't know plants

  18. Sweet as Mr b.caapi B)B) What are you gonna pollinate it with?

What's the deal with the freo community garden centre strain, has it got different growth habit or potency or is just the common strain around Perth?

Either way I'd really like a cutting for propogation, as all of my pachs are sourced from over east. Is this community garden still in existance in Freo, or alternatively would anyone be willing to offer one up for sale?? (don't have much to trade I'm afraid)

  19. Hehe, I read this article too. "They're eating our tree - Thieves high on leaves of Perth plant" fucking dumbass paper, I had a good chuckle. I especially like the picture of the the black guy up the tree though - scunted!!!:P:lol:

  20. Yeah I'm gonna place an order from SAB and herbalistics and might resort to this if I have to, but would prefer to find someome in W.A. to help me out, it would just make the whole thing alot easier and provide me with peace of mind.

If someone from W.A. has had success with importing them, please also let me know. I'd like a cutting off you, but if thats not possible, would like some reassurence that importing from over east will not cause me any undue problems.

    Cheers

I've ordered catha from SAB and gomaos recently, both from over east and both arrived without problems. As such, my plants are fairly small, but I do have a spare red strain khat if you want to trade. PM me if interested.
