  1. Hi,

I reciently dropped a square of agar into a few jars made up of rice malt and a pinch of brown rice floor. The mycelium seems to have grown really quickly and I can't see any obvious signs of contamination - what should I be looking for ?? I would expect to see little dark lumps of mold or to see the liquid become thicker with bacteria.

can you offer any advice on spotting contams?

    cheers

    Jim

  2. Hi everyone,

That is me with white elm, grown outdoors in plantpots ( Pasterized wheat straw)

  3. The tree chopping was rained off... giving me some more time to get the spawn ready.

I'm hoping to catch the tree surgens before they chip all the wood and get a selection of limbs/trunks for

    ....project reishi.....

On a similar note -I have been doing some experiments with 'Red Heads - firelogs' the ones from the supermarket about 8 logs for $4. one log makes about 1kg of moist sawdust.

currently I have one sawdust/bran block of H Ulmarius which is almost fully colonised, and a few jars of sawdust that I was testing to see if it would support any growth.

I will post pics and results when I start getting some real results.

    thanks for the help.

    Jim

  4. Hi,

I have just posted a message in the trade forum but thought I would post it here as the tempeh is fungus - Rhizopus oligosporus = yummy fungus

I posted the following in the trade forum...

I have some things to give away

2 x batch of kefir grains - I will need you to pay for postage (probably about $6.50 express post anywhere in Australia)

and 5 x small packs tempeh starter - enough to make 1kg of tempeh and hopefully enough to start your own renewable starter. I can provide instructions.

    PM me if your interested

    cheers

  6. I just recieved notice that on wednesday I will be having three Box Elders and one huge cypress chopped down on my property. Has anyone ever used either of these types of tree in log form of mulch???

    I have reishi, P ostreatus, H Ulmarius & Azures

Also how long do you think I have before wild fungus get a hold in the freshly chopped logs???

I'm thinking about trying to get as much Reishi spawn together as soon as I can to innoculate as much as I can.

    any tips??

    cheers

    Jim

  7. That’s great tomtom,

I have scheduled a few reishi paper blocks for this weekend (as from rev's oven tek) I might roll up a few newspapers too...

I made the same mistake with the newspaper - I used a clean bench top to roll some cooled newspaper for some oysters. I had read the warning too.

Anyway, keep us up to date with what happens with the newspaper..

    cheers

  8. Thanks for that - it was an interesting thought on trading... I was just wondering what the done thing was.

I think all Australian hobby mycologists need FunkyFungus in a way - its good to know that when ( When not if..) I end up messing up a culture and dont have any spare, i can get a brand new culture from FF. I will let you do all the fiddly sterile stuff.. I am more interested in the fun bits...

I think its great that we all trade but I also think we are all better off with FF operating in Australia.

    Yay for Rev...

PS: the reishi culture I bought from you is doing great!

    cheers

  9. Hi,

I’m pretty new to growing my own mushrooms and have made a few trades over the last few months, I was wondering through… whats the etiquette with regards to trading cultures that I have purchased? It wouldn’t be fair to buy a culture then send everyone else a plate of the same culture. How do you guys feel about trades/purchases when does the culture become ‘yours’...

    Cheers

    Jim

  10. the address for the redhead fire logs is at

    http://www.redheads.com.au/layout800.html

check out the MSDS on firelogs too.

I havn't bought any yet but I am hoping this answers a few questions/problems with wood decomposing fungi.

As I'm very new to growing and only have Pleurotus Pulmonarius which from what I've read wouldn't be a good candidate for testing this sawdust ( as it would pretty much grow on anything) so I'm hoping to be able to get a shiitake culture from some supermarket mushrooms - which, in time I will hopefully test on the firelogs.

I will let you all know how it goes.

even if the firelogs don't support mushroom growth they are still a great idea.

of course I will cheerfully accept any donations of wood decomposing wedges to aid this experiment.

    Cheers

    Jim

  11. I read something a while ago at the shroomery about people using compressed sawdust pellets as a base substrate for wood decomposing fungi -

well, I have spoken with the good people at Swedish Match Australia and Redheads firelogs are totally additive and chemically free - the process involved to produce them is just lots of heat and pressure.

I was wondering what you thought about using these compressed 'logs' as an easy source of sawdust - they are a blend of sawdusts so it could anything - most likely a by-product of Australia's logging of old growth forests...

what do you think? please let me know if you think its worth a try???

    cheers

  12. Hi guys

I came across this topic while searching - if you would like dairy cultures I have a few from a commercial dairy supply - its pretty hard to come by the right molds and bacteria in australia but there is one place http://www.cheeselinks.com.au

I have purchased alot of things from them with no complaints.

they have several bacterial starters to acidify the milk

and about 5/6 diferent molds for different cheeses plus a range of other stuff.

they also sell a book 'Home cheesemaking' neil and carole Willman but I would recomend 'Home Cheesemaking' - Ricki Carroll, a much friendlier book

The willmans also run courses which run around the country every now and then.

the following pic is my latest cheese three approx 350gm cheeses @ about three weeks old the mold is Penicillium Rocheforte PRB6 which is a mild blue (I only used three drops of mold suspension to 11 litres of milk!) I will scrape the cheese once it is completely covered with mold then age for about three months - yum!

I'm about to make another order to cheeselinks for some white mold (penicillium Candidum) to make some camembert which you can eat after only a few weeks.

** I will figure out the add image function and pots a pic in reply to this message**

    cheers

  13. wow.!. , the yellow pages- who would have thought....

    I found some disposable filters 600 x 600 x 150mm

roughly $500 with throw away housing -

i think I'll make another glove box....

anyone have a second hand flow hood???

    cheers

    Jim

  14. Hi

I'm new to the corroboree but have a little knowledge from research at the shroomery - anyway, after struggling with a very clumsy glove box I would like to consider a laminar flow hood - I was wondering if you could offer any suggestions on sources of HEPA filters in Australia - from what I can see this should be the only bit of equipment I would need to buy - the rest I could make and install myself.

    Thanks

    Jim
