    Rate my setup...

I was wondering about this. I was going to drill some holes in the sides, at the top that can be covered by flap to increase air flow by convection. does that mean I should be opening my take away containers every now and then to give then a breath? cheers

    Rate my setup...

Yeah, Ive got Gnats. The hydro shop gave me 'Neem gold' to use on the surface of the potting mix. ... i was hoping it would have cleared them up by now but I still have them. I was going to use 'Scarid 10' until I realised how toxic it is. cheers

    Not So Cute And Cuddly

I've always wondered how I would fair against a wild animal. for example, hypothetically I think I would be able to fight off a Racoon. I think a single medium/large sized dog would be about my limit. they can bite hard and tear but they are stupid. what do you think? please realise this is a stupid question so don't get offended.

    Opuntia compressa

I picked up some large Opuntia pads today - probably 45 cm long. if anyone want them let me know. I'm still to figure out what species it is. Great old plants, They stood over 6 foot high with main 'trunks' about 5 inches in diameter. very few spines. they had fruit too that were just starting to turn from green to a red colour. Odd because I thought they would fruit in the warmer months.
  8. I hope this isn't too obvious, but recently when I view messages. Rather than having each message and reply following each other they are abbreviated into a number of links. ‘Other people who replied to this topic' or something like that. It’s hard to follow a conversation. Anyway, please let me know if I've just missed something Right I get it Options / standard view... right...

    Water Kefir

It sounds like you are doing everything right. I was a little disapointed when I first got my grains. they were not growing very quick. its a bit like watching grass grow... sooner or later you will notice that you have more than you need and its time to cut the grass. what substituted amino acids do you need? then once fermented how do you refine... sounding interesting I've still got the Natto in the fridge. I got some Bacillus subtilis 'crystals' that I havn't used. they are pretty old. If your after anything in particular I have quite a good collection of edible cultures (mostly blends of micro organisms) natto, tempeh, miso (x heaps of different types) dairy cultures, dairy molds and bacterias - Penicillium roqueforti, Brevibacterium linens etc cheers

    Water Kefir

Hi when I'm growing mine they do take a while to grow. I can't be sure how long it take to double in size for example but after a week and an a half I wouldn't expect to notice a big difference in the growth. what i can add is... 1: leave the grains longer to brew before moving them to the next batch. 2: take as much of the goo as possible to the next batch ( seperate the grains but don't rinse them) 3: I have noticed that grains growing in milk grow quicker 4: it could be possible to break up the grains into smaller bits for greater increase in growth<-- be careful here!. Good to see someone else into fermented food ! ;) good luck cheers
  12. I got my copy a few weeks ago. it hardely seemed damaged at all. excelent buy. thanks t .

    rooted upside down

Last night I went over a friends place, He was showing me his little cacti collection and he showed me a 30cm long section he had planted last year- he was worried he had put it in upside down. in my very limited knowledge I though he had. the spines were pointing up. it seemed to be pretty well rooted. I'm just wondering what you think the future is for this upside down cacti ( he he ) it is a T pachanoi cheers

pic for ACE - black = bad ?

Hi folks, This is mainly a pic for ACE as I think I might have 'over loved' one of the cuts he gave me earlier in the year. Ace was very clear about leaving the cuts out of the ground until spring... but I got impatient and planted. It was moist to begin with but has been dry for ages. Basically the blackness is on the underside as you can see. Its bone dry and very hard. As you can see it’s starting to root. I keep this inside where it has the full benefit of heating. What do you think? Could it be black mold which has dried - would it be ok to plant?? I would actually like to plant and water it while it’s inside. Would love to hear what you think Thanks ACE

Thanks Guys, I didn't think it was terminal but it is nice to get a 2nd.3rd & 4th opinion. cheers and Yes... BRING ON SUMMER! Illegalbrain - all my cut cacti have started to put out roots since I started using the heating when the cold of winter hit. probably a month and a half ago.

I know T has - I just read about it in another thread if your thinking of giving it a shot please do some research - I didn't tell you to do nuffin!
