    Hydroponic Ethnobotanicals

growing hyrdoponics in coco coir is truely organic it is the coconut fibre from coconuts "coconut fiber is rapidly becoming one of the most popular growing mediums in the world. In fact it may soon be THE most popular. It is the first totally "organic" growing medium that offers top performance in hydroponic systems. Coconut fiber is essentially a waste product of the coconut industry, it is the powdered husks of the coconut itself. There are many advantages - it maintains a larger oxygen capacity than rockwool, yet also has superior water holding ability than rockwool which is a real advantage for hydroponic systems that have intermittent watering cycles. Coconut fiber is also high in root stimulating hormones and offers some protection against root diseases including fungus infestation. Dutch growers have found that a mixture of 50% coconut fiber and 50% expanded clay pellets is the perfect growing medium. One word of caution about coconut fiber, you must be careful when you purchase coconut fiber. There is a commonly available, lower grade of coconut fiber that is high in sea-salt and is very fine grained. This lower grade coconut fiber will lead to disappointing results when used in a hydroponic system." Using this with an organic fertilzer is truely organic.... I use sand and gravel for lophs to create an arid-oponic enviroment although my fertilizer regime is non organic...

    pulverizing plants

I think that would do a pretty good job if you kept feeding it thru as would be the case with a lawn mower..have you tryed smashing the roots with a metal mallet before blending them to rupture em up abit..you know the mallets the ones with spikes on it that one uses in the kitchen for tenderising stuff, i dont know there real name im not allowed in the kitchen only to get a beer from the fridge this is the missus domain i dare not venture!...a sledge hammer would get em good also but may be messy?!

    Buying a 4WD

You need to find a honest chap selling his vehicle, one thing to bear in mind alot of old cruisers have been thrashed, after all they are a work vehicle...i wouldnt buy nothing over 200k on the dash,(remembering to rebuild an engine will be 10k, it cost me 4k for a new gearbox in my pathfinder) you need to find an old fellow who has looked after his 4wd and only used it to tow his boat for fishing on sundays!...gd luck with that, but they are out there seek & ye shall find!

    Hydroponic Ethnobotanicals

For psychotria and caapi i think use HPS as they will thrive on the heat as these are shade loving plants i would staple gun a piece of shade cloth over them, ive tried psychotria and caapi and iboga under fluoro and LED and i found they done better under HPS with distance from the light i kept them in the corner as HPS really are the best for heat also i was using a 250 watt HPS which is little less intense then 400 or 600 as i use it to grow lophs so i dont need large lumens as they dont grow tall....ive tried fluoros and LED and i always go back to HPS these are m favourite lights nothing can compare to them for heat output and growth rate.. hope this helps alittle its always about experimentation and fine tuning and finding what works best for the budget...

    Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera)

it grows pretty easy as long as seed is viable sand the seed either with sandpaper or on concrete till you see the orange inside then soak in warm water if they dont swell to twice there size in 24 hours you need to sand the seed casing more, change the water daily and onces it has sprouted they grow rather quick then just plant the root system and away you go ive grown em in my fishtank, but the fish love to eat for some reason, they munch em pretty quick. which is a good thing as they grow quite large quickly under a fluoro fishtank light! Also i think they prefer clayish type of soil, but i have gravel in my tank!

    Seedlings getting eaten :(

I had a cricket do the same to mine bit a chunk out of a tiny achuma seedling and it died, the main bug problem i have with cacti seeds especially in humidity dome is gnats & I get em with pyretheum spray, but they always reappear, so i diligently spray weekly...

How to buy a 2nd hand car?

Buy private (trading post etc), car salesman in the yards are always marked up and dodgy and usually rip ya with a trade in, better off selling em privately perhaps....find a little granny or grandpa that has always had there car serviced with record to prove it...and then offer em reduced price for cash....cash always works for a bargain buy! Gd luck!

AWESOME GRAFTS...and an exceptional graft you sent me....quite a funny site to see a loph grafted to perekiopsis with such a long stem, reminds me of a UFO balancing on a stilt or the JETSON's house in the cartoon...a globular blob on a stick... Aaahh surely this an animated life! Thank you one happy customer!

Using Pachyrhizus erosus (jícama) as a pesticide.

I think you would just use water, solvent could be harmful, but I have made a homemade pesticide with moonshine, tobacco, onion and garlic, trying to kill spider mites(didnt work tho) the alcohol evaporates quite quickly off plant tissue supposedly, although I sprayed my cacti with it panicked about the pure alcohol and sprayed em with water, if you soaked the crushed leaves and strained, then just try and find the effective concentration perhaps by boiling it down, this is interesting, im interested in this also, ive started growing pyretheum for the exact same purpose to make my own insecticide, id grow a neem tree to if i could! Perhaps someone with some chemistry experience in pesticides or insecticide manufacture etc may elaborate?

    COMPETITION : FREE LOPH SEED

nice ive never even heard of half them there...lol
  23. Surely one would have to hope that some common sense is written up to preserve old specimens, some cacti gardens in victoria are over 80 years old the one in bendigo vic was established in 1933 and many that grow there, are even rare in cultivation to this day and is a very popular tourist attraction & surely if something like 10% of the whole cacti species contain some kinda misdeamenour precursor chemical, im sure some of the cacti in this garden would be surely outlawed. Also to outlaw lophs would in reality be a government infringement on there behalf to honour & preserve endangered species...so much for a sustainable future if they start banning endangered species from hobbyist and collectors alike who have dedicated there life to the preservation of many rare and endangered species. The whole proposal is sacrilege and written up to assume that we are all drug consuming or illicit manufacturers of illegal substances and I for one take great offense at this given accusation by the legislation, when in reality the majority just wanna grow plants to preserve there heritage and beautiful diversity and couldnt care less to there alkaloidal content, hell a crafty enough chemist could probably synthesise all kinds of illicit misdemeanors from a jar of marmalade or pepper shaker full of black pepper!
